Afro-Ukrainians(Ukrainian:Афроукраїнці[1]) orBlack UkrainiansareUkrainiansofSub-Saharan Africandescent, including Black people who have settled inUkraine.

History

In 2012,Gaitana,by then "the only Afro-Ukrainian celebrity in her country", represented Ukraine at theEurovision Song Contest.[2]

In 2019,Zhan Beleniukbecame the first Afro-Ukrainian member of theUkrainian Parliament.[3][4]

The Ukrainian wordnehr(Ukrainian:негр) is widely used and is a nativizedloan wordfrom theFrench:nègre,lit.'Negro', itself a nativized loan from theSpanish:negroand thePortuguese:negro.[5]unlikenègreis considered offensive in French,nehr/неɾрis not considered offensive. The nativeSlavicword for things that are actually black (e.g. a car with black paint) ischórnyy(Ukrainian:чо́рний).
