Ainarois a town inEast Timor,the capital of theAinaro suco,theAinaro administrative postand theAinaro Municipality,and is located in the southwest part of the country. The town of Ainaro is located 78 km south ofDili,the national capital.
Destruction of Ainaro
[edit]During theIndonesianoccupation from 1975 to 1999, Ainaro was home to a large contingent ofIndonesian military (TNI)-backedpro-Indonesia militiasin the months leading up to the 30 August 1999referendumonindependence.As a result, it suffered near-total devastation during theTNI orchestrated scorched earth operationwith more than 95 percent of its buildings destroyed.
Climate
[edit]Ainaro's climate lies on the border between atropical savanna climate(KöppenAw) and atropical monsoon climate(Am). Compared to Dili, Ainaro receives about two-and-a-half times more annual rainfall because it lies on the windward side of the southeasterntrade winds,which especially during the first half of Dili's dry season give moisture to the southeastern side of Timor whilst the northern side is dry.
