Alex Michael Wimmers(born November 1, 1988) is an American formerprofessional baseballpitcher.He played inMajor League Baseball(MLB) for theMinnesota Twins.He played college baseball atOhio State.
Career

[edit]Wimmers attendedArchbishop Moeller High SchoolinCincinnati,Ohio,[1]andOhio State University,where he playedcollege baseballfor theOhio State Buckeyes baseballteam. In 2009, his sophomore year, he was named anAll-American.[2]After the 2009 season, he playedcollegiate summer baseballwith theBourne Bravesof theCape Cod Baseball League.[3]He won the 2010National Pitcher of the Year Award.[4]
Minnesota Twins
[edit]The Twins drafted Wimmers in the first round, with the 21st overall selection, of the2010 MLB Draft.He signed with the Twins, receiving a $1.332 millionsigning bonus.[5]
On August 2, 2012, Wimmers underwentTommy John surgeryto repair a tornUCL.He had made one start with theNew Britain Rock Catsof theDouble–AEastern Leagueand one with theGulf Coast League Twinsof theRookie-levelGulf Coast League.[6]Wimmers underwent elbow surgery in October 2013,[5]but was healthy to start the 2014 season.[7]He pitched for theChattanooga Lookoutsof the Double–ASouthern Leaguein 2015.[8]
Wimmers began the 2016 season with Chattanooga, and was promoted to theRochester Red Wingsof theTriple–AInternational League.[9]The Twins promoted Wimmers to the major leagues for the first time on August 26, 2016.[10]On November 7, he was removed from the 40–man roster and sent outright to Triple–A.[11]Wimmers subsequently rejected the assignment and elected free agency.[12]
On May 16, 2017, Wimmers re–signed with the Twins on a new minor league contract.[13]
Wimmers began the 2017 season with Rochester. The Twins promoted him to the major leagues on June 1.[14]On June 23, Wimmers was designated for assignment. He became a free agent at the end of the 2017 season.
Miami Marlins
[edit]Wimmers signed a minor league contract with theMiami Marlinson December 15, 2017.[15]He was released from the organization on June 4, 2018.
Sugar Land Skeeters
[edit]On June 29, 2018, Wimmers signed with theSugar Land Skeetersof theAtlantic League of Professional Baseball.He became a free agent following the 2018 season.
