AdmiralSir Alexander Noel Campbell Bingley,GCB,OBE(15 February 1905 – 28 September 1972) was aRoyal Navyofficer who served asCommander-in-Chief, PortsmouthandAllied Command Channelfrom 1961 to 1963.

Naval career[edit]

Bingley joined theRoyal Navyas a cadet in 1918.[1]

Bingley served in theSecond World Waron the staff of the commander-in-chief,Home Fleet.[1]He went on to be captain of theaircraft carrierHMSSlingerin 1943, of the aircraft carrierHMSBiterin 1944, and of theMobile Naval Air BaseHMSNabaronin 1945.[1]

After the war, Bingley was appointed deputy director of air warfare.[1]He went on to bechief of staffto the flag officer (air) and then commander of the aircraft carrierHMSEaglein 1952.[1]He was appointedFifth Sea Lordand deputy chief of Naval Staff (Air) in 1954 andFlag Officer, Aircraft Carriersin 1958.[1]He was madecommander-in-chief, Mediterranean FleetandNATOcommanderAllied Forces Mediterraneanin 1959 and thenCommander-in-Chief, Portsmouthand Allied Commander-in-Chief, Channel in 1961; he retired in 1963.[1]

Personal life[edit]

Bingley marriedJuliet Martin Vickin 1948. After his death she resumed her career as a social worker after a gap of 28 years, and was appointed aMember of the Order of the British Empirein 1970. They had three children,[2]and lived atHoddesdoninHertfordshire.[3]
