Sir Alfred CooperFRCS(28 January 1838 – 3 March 1908) was a fashionableEnglishsurgeonand clubman of the late 19th century whose patients includedAlbert Edward, Prince of Wales.

Cooper was born inBracondale,Norfolk, England, the son of William Cooper, barrister, by his wife Anna, née Marsh. He was educated atMerchant Taylors' School.As a doctor and surgeon, his speciality was invenereal disease,which gave him an unusual degree of access to, and perspective on, lateVictorianaristocrats and their notions of morality.

He was appointed aSurgeon-Lieutenant-Colonelto theLoyal Suffolk Hussarson 17 May 1899. The Hussars was aYeomanryregiment, which was embodied for active service inSouth Africaduring theSecond Boer War(1899–1902).[1]Cooper was the senior medical officer to the regiment until he resigned his commission on 8 November 1902.[2]

He wasknightedfor services to medicine in the1902 Coronation Honours,[3]receiving the accolade from KingEdward VIIatBuckingham Palaceon 24 October that year.[4]

Marriage and issue[edit]

Cooper became the third husband ofLady Agnes Cecil Emmeline Duff,daughter ofAgnes Duff, Countess Fife,and was devoted to her all his life. Lady Agnes Duff's first husband, Viscount Dupplin, was the eldest son ofthe 12th Earl of Kinnoull(issue one daughter), and her second husband had been a certain Herbert Flower (brother ofCyril Flower, 1st Baron Battersea) (no issue).

Lady Agnes Duff was the youngest daughter ofJames Duff, 5th Earl Fifeby his wife,Lady Agnes Hay,herself the daughter ofWilliam Hay, 18th Earl of Errolland granddaughter ofKing William IVby his mistress, the actressDorothy Jordan.

Lady Agnes Duff's brother,Alexander Duff, 1st Duke of Fife,was the husband ofLouise, Princess Royal,the eldest daughter of KingEdward VII.

Cooper and his wife had four children together.[5]

Death[edit]

Cooper died inMenton,France,in 1908.
