Ali Nazmi

Ali Nazmi(Azerbaijani:Əli Nəzmi,pen nameofAli Mammadzadeh(Əli Məmmədzadə), 1878, Sarov–January 1, 1946,Baku) was anAzerbaijanipoet, a representative of the 20th-century Azerbaijanirealismand successor ofMirza Alakbar Sabir.Nazmi was the first translator ofShakespeare'sKing Learinto Azerbaijani.[1]

Nazmi's first poemA Start to the Villagewas published in 1904. In 1926-1931 Nazmi was a secretary ofMolla Nasraddinmagazine. During theSoviet-German Warhe wrote severalsatires:Hitler's Union with Devil,Wolf's Protest Against God,My Homelandand others. Nazmi strived for the purity of Azerbaijani language againstPan-TurkistsandPanislamists.[2]
