TheAmbarnaya(Russian:Амбарная,lit. 'barn girl') is a river inSiberiawhich flows in a northerly direction intoLake Pyasino.On leaving Lake Pyasino, the waters emerge as the riverPyasina.It shares a common delta with the riverNorilskaya.It is 60 kilometres (37 mi) long, and has adrainage basinof 428 square kilometres (165 sq mi).[2]
The river is fed by rain andmeltwater.[3]It is shallow and itsbedconsists ofglacial moraine–gravelandpebbles.[4]It is heavily polluted by the mining industry ofNorilsk,namelyNornickel,so fishing is no longer possible.[5]
Diesel spill[edit]
In May 2020, 20,000tonnesofdiesel fuelspilt into the river from a power plant. With a 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) stretch of river seriously affected, Russia's president,Vladimir Putin,declared a state of emergency.[6][1][7]
