Aneirin Hughes(born Aneurin Hughes, 8 May 1958) is a Welsh actor and singer known for playing Chief Superintendent Brian Prosser in theBBC4Welsh police dramaHinterland.He won a Best ActorBAFTA Cymru(or BAFTA Wales) for his appearance as Delme inCameleon(1997), aWelsh languagefilm.

Education

Hughes was born inAberystwyth,where he studied music at theUniversity College of Walesunder ProfessorIan Parrottand sang with thesopranoHazel Holt.While a music student he conducted the university chamber choir, theAberystwyth Elizabethan Madrigal Singers,for several years. Hughes went on to study at theRoyal Scottish Academy of Music and Dramawinning the Baritone Prize and both the Hugh S. Robertson Prize for Conducting and Vocal Ensemble. He was also a founder member of the Academy Strings and a recipient of the Leach Foundation Prize.

Acting career

Hughes began his acting career in 1994 in theBBC Walessoap operaPobol y Cwm.He went on to appear inBlood on the Dole,Casualty,Family AffairsasDIPatrick Grenham,Spooks,Take MewithRobson GreenandEastEndersin January and April 2009 asAndy Jones,the adoptive father ofDanielle Jones.[1]He reprised the role in June 2016.

Hughes won a Best ActorBAFTA Cymru(or BAFTA Wales) for his appearance as Delme inCameleon(1997), aWelsh languagefilm.[2][3]He appeared regularly inJudge John Deedas Neil Haughton and inYoung Draculaas Graham Branagh. He played Harper in the TV movieHarper and IsleswithHywel Bennett[1]and appeared in the 1998 filmThe Theory of FlightwithKenneth Branagh.More recently, he appeared in theS4CdramaPen Talarand inHolby CityasSir Fraser Anderson,[1]and has also returned to theBBC Walessoap operaPobol y Cwmas a new character, Morgan 'Moc' Thomas, whom he played from 2012 to 2013. He reprised the role in 2017. In 2012, he portrayed the politician and Welsh-language campaignerGwynfor Evansin an S4C docu-drama, titledGwynfor Evans: Y Penderfyniad?(The Decision?).[4]

In 2013, Hughes appeared in the S4C filmY Syrcas (The Circus).[5]He held a major role throughout the bilingually-filmed detective programmeY Gwyll(Hinterland),appearing as Detective Superintendent Brian Prosser in all three series from 2013 to 2016. In May 2014 he appeared as Organ Morgan withTom JonesandKatherine JenkinsinKevin Allen'sBBCcentenary production ofUnder Milk WoodbyDylan Thomas.[6][7]Hughes has also appeared as Tom Howells in the Welshthrillertelevision seriesKeeping Faith(2017) and as builder Bill Thornhill – an old rival of local villainPat Phelan(Connor McIntyre) — inCoronation Street(2018).

In 2022 Hughes appeared in the video gameElden Ringas the giant blacksmith Iji.

Personal life

Hughes has run several marathons for charity, including for Bloodwise.[8]

He is a founding member of theMonmouth Male Voice Choir.[9]
