Angamaly(Malayalam pronunciation:[ɐŋgɐmɐːli]) is amunicipality[2]in theErnakulam districtofKerala,India.It is located 20 km (12.4 mi) north of the district collectorate inThrikkakaraand about 203 km (126.1 mi) north of the state capitalThiruvananthapuram.Angamaly is part of theKochi metropolitan areaand is located 24 km (14.9 mi) northeast of theKochicity centre. As per the2011 Indian census,Angamaly has a population of 33,465 people, and a population density of 1,640/km2(4,200/sq mi).

It is situated about 30 km (19 mi) north of the city centre, the town lies at the intersection ofMain Central Road(MC Road) andNational Highway 544.Cochin International Airportis 7 km from the town of Angamaly.

Angamaly railway stationis the fifth busiest in GreaterKochiin terms of passenger footfalls and revenue generated, afterErnakulam Junction railway station,Ernakulam Town railway station,Aluva railway stationandTripunithura railway station.[citation needed] There is a proposed railway line from Angamaly toSabarimala,which will connect the high-ranges with the low land. Progress toward completing the new line is slow as a result of various regional and political issues. The project has, however, obtained a new lease of life after theGovernment of Keralaagreeing to bear half the cost for the project in January 2021.[3] National Highway 544connectingKanyakumaritoSalempasses through Angamaly. TheNH 17which connectsKochiandMumbaiis 20 kilometers from Angamaly.Main Central Road(M.C. Road) connecting Central Kerala to Kerala capital serves as an important road connecting many towns in the eastern side of the state.

A proposed New Kochi Bypass project (from Karayamparambu toNettoor), andKochi Metrophase 3 being proposed to Angamaly as well asCochin International Airport.[4] The proposed Kochi Global Industrial Finance and Trade (GIFT) city under theKochi-BengaluruNational Industrial Corridor is proposed atAyyampuzha,which is close to Angamaly.[5]

History

Several old coins and other artefacts found from the region tells this area was predominant with Buddhists and Jains.Malayatoor,which is Christian devotional centre, is very near to Angamaly.St. Thomas, the Apostlewho was deputed to the region byJesus Christcame via Angadikadavu in Angamaly using Manjali Thodu to come fromKodungaloorport at AD 58.[6]There is evidence for the churches in the locality built as early as AD 409 and AD 822.[7]It was the headquarters ofMar Abraham,Assyrian-Chaldean Catholic Archbishop of Angamaly and All India (Hendo) in the, sixteenth century.[8]

Originally established as apanchayatin May 1952, Angamaly became a municipality in April 1978 and is also aLegislative Assembly constituencyfrom 1965 in theErnakulamdistrict. The area is known for theAngamaly police firingin 1959, when police opened fire on protesters who had been demonstrating against Kerala's communist government.[citation needed]

The Angamaly Firing was an incident that took place in Angamaly, Kerala, on 13 June 1959, when police opened fire on protesters who had been demonstrating against Kerala's communist government. Seven people were killed resulting in the intensification ofVimochana Samaram,a protest against the then communist led government. Incidentally, it happened on the 50th birthday ofE. M. S. Namboothiripad,the then Chief Minister of Kerala.[citation needed]
