Angelika NeuwirthFBA(born 4 November 1943,Nienburg) is a GermanIslamic studiesscholar and professor ofQur’anic studiesatFreie UniversityinBerlin.

Born inNienburg, Lower Saxony,[1]she studied Islamic studies, Semitic studies and classical philology at the Universities of Berlin, Tehran, Göttingen, Jerusalem, and Munich.[2]

Neuwirth is also the director of the research projectCorpus Coranicum.[3][4]Between 1994 and 1999, she was the director of the German Institute of Oriental Studies in Beirut andIstanbul.She currently works as a professor inFreie Universityin Berlin and as a visiting professor at theUniversity of JordaninAmman,and her research focuses on theQur'an,its interpretations, and modern Arabic literature in the Eastern Mediterranean, especiallyPalestinianpoetry and prose related to theArab-Israeli conflict.

Awards

In 2011 she was named an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences,[5]and in 2012 was granted an honorary doctorate from Yale University's Department of Religious Studies.[3][6]In June 2013, theDeutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtungawarded her itsSigmund Freud Prizefor her research on the Qur'an.[7][8]In July 2018 she was elected as a Fellow of theBritish Academy.[9]
