Early and personal life
[edit]Sinha was born inPrayagraj,Uttar Pradeshto Prem Govind Sinha and Sushila Sinha. He went to school in Kalagarh,Garhwal,Government Inter College,Allahabadand Queen's College,Varanasi.He completed his graduation in Mechanical Engineering fromThe Aligarh Muslim Universityin 1987.[1]
His wife Ratnaa Sinha is also a director who debuted with the 2017 filmShaadi Mein Zaroor AanastarringRajkummar RaoandKriti Kharbanda.[citation needed]
His brother Anupam Sinha is also a director who is known for his filmShukriya: Till Death Do Us ApartstarringAftab ShivdasaniandShriya Saran.
Career
[edit]Sinha worked for two years inNew Delhias a theatre artist before moving toMumbaion 4 December 1990. He worked as an assistant director toPankaj Parasharuntil 1994 before branching out as an independent director for television forZee TV.He was noticed for his work onShikast,the flagship show of the TV network in Mumbai. This was followed by the TV showSea HawksforUTV.Sea Hawkswas the number one show for 35 weeks across all networks. 72 episodes later, he turned to directing music videos.[citation needed]
In 2000, he left working on music videos to start his first feature filmTum Bin.It starredPriyanshu Chatterjee,Sandali Sinha,Himanshu MalikandRaqesh Vashisth.It went on to become a major box-office success and has gained acultstatus over the years.[2][3][4]
Sinha's second featureAapko Pehle Bhi Kahin Dekha HaistarredPriyanshu ChatterjeeandSakshi Shivanand.[5]His third film, the multi-starrerDus,was the eighth highest-grossing film of the year 2005.[6]This was followed byTathastu(2006) andCash(2007).
Before directing and producingTum Bin IIandMulk,Sinha directedShah Rukh KhanandKareena Kapoorstarrersuperhero film,Ra.Onefor which he wrote the script as well along withKanika Dhillon.
In 2019, Sinha produced and directedArticle 15under his production house Benaras Media Works withAyushmann Khurranain the lead. The film is based onArticle 15of theIndian Constitution,which is about prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion,race,caste,sexor place of birth.[7]The film generally received positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success.[citation needed]
In 2020, Sinha helmedThappadstarringTaapsee Pannu,which released on 28 February 2020, and received highly positive reviews from critics, but was an average success at the box-office.
Sinha is also the founder and owner of Benaras Media Works, the production company that he established in 2012 to produce his films and television projects.[8][9]
