Arbeo(alsoAriboorArbo)of Freising(723 or earlier nearMeran– 4 May 784) was anearly medievalauthor and theBishopofFreisingfrom 764.

Arbeo is thought to have been a scion of theHuosinoble dynasty in the stem duchy ofBavaria. He may have been the child which, according to his own hagiography, SaintCorbinianrescued from the floodwaters of thePasserRiver nearMeran.Arbeo was raised by Corbinians's brother Erembert and prepared for an ecclesiastical career, becoming a member of theBenedictine Order. At first a priest and notary under BishopJoseph of Freisingand official of the episcopal chancery, he was appointed abbot of the newly founded monastery ofScharnitzin 763. One year later he succeeded Joseph as Bishop of Freising.

During his tenure, the Bavarian monasteries ofInnichen,SchäftlarnandSchlierseewere established, and Scharnitz Abbey relocated toSchlehdorf.Arbeo had the relics of Saint Corbinian transferred toFreising. In the long-time quarrels of theAgilolfingdukeTassilo III of Bavariawith hisFrankishsuzerains, the bishop remained a loyal supporter of KingCharlemagneand may have lost his diocese in his later years.

Arbeo founded the Freising episcopal library andscriptorium. He is often counted as the first named author inGermanand is sometimes credited with the composition of theCodex Abrogans,a bilingual vocabulary inLatinandOld High German, often described as the first German book.

He is buried inFreising. His commemoration day in the Catholic Church is the 4th of May. An affiliation with MargraveAribo, progenitor of theAribonidsis possible but has not been established.
