Asa Akira(born January 3, 1985) is an Americanpornographic film actress,writer and adult film director. Akira has appeared in 689 adult films as of June 2023. In 2013, she became the third Asian performer (afterAsia Carreraand Stephanie Swift) to win theAVN Female Performer of the Year Award.[3]Akira hosted the1stand2ndceremonies for thePornhub Awards.[4]She was inducted into theAVN Hall of Fame,XRCO Hall of Fame,Urban X Hall of Fame,andBrazzersHall of Fame.

Early life

Asa Akira is of Japanese descent and is from New York; she spent her formative years in Japan before moving back to the United States in her teens.[5][page needed]Asa is her real first name, which means "morning" inJapanese.Herprofessional surnamewas taken from the anime filmAkira.[6]

Career

Akira began working as adominatrixwhen she was 19 years old.[7]She later worked as astripperat theHustler Clubin New York.[8]In 2006–2007 she was a regular on theBubba the Love Spongeradio show and was known as the "Show Whore".[2]Her first boy-girl scene was with Travis Knight forGina LynnProductions, after having already done several girl-girl scenes, mainly with Lynn.[2]She then signed a contract withVouyer Mediabefore becoming afreelancersix months later.[9]

Akira received several award nominations for her role inDavid Aaron Clark's 2009 film,Pure,in which she plays a telephonist at a fetish dungeon who has an affair with the head-mistress' husband.[10]

Akira co-hosted the30th Annual AVN Awardsalongside pornographic actressJesse Janeand comedianApril Macie.[11]She won the AVN Female Performer of the Year Award that night.[12]She was also the most awarded person during that ceremony.[13]

In 2013, she made her directorial debut withElegant Angel'sGangbanged 6.[14]

On October 9, 2013, Akira announced that she signed an exclusive performing contract withWicked Pictures.[15]Her debut film as a contract performer for the company wasAsa Is Wicked.[16]

In January 2014, Akira,Dana DeArmond,Chanel Preston,andJessie Andrewswere featured in aCosmopolitanmagazine article titled "4 Porn Stars on How They Stay Fit."[18]The article was inspired by actressGabrielle Union's comment made onConan O'Brien'stalk showabout striving to follow the fitness routines of the porn stars she saw at her gym.[19]

In 2014, Akira featured as a guest inepisode 1 of season 3of theEric Andre Show.[citation needed]

In 2017, Akira appeared as herself in thefirst episode of the sixteenth seasonofFamily Guyin a live-actioncasting couchcutaway scene withPeter Griffin.Akira later noted that, ironically, this was her first casting couch scene. The episode featured a recurring joke of people asking Peter "who was the girl on the couch" and Peter giving a deadpan reply that he is certain each inquirer already knows who she is. In theeighth episode of the twentieth seasonafter Peter is fired from his job, he tries to clear his browser history, but it's too late as the company IT guy notes that Peter is "all in" on Akira.

In 2013 Akira and artistDavid Choestarted a podcast featuring 90-minute episodes calledDVDASA.[26]It is aimed at a young adult audience, with its goal being to help youth with their problems related to sexuality, career, relationships, etc.

In June 2014, Akira appeared on aYouTubevideo with vloggerCaspar Lee.[27]

Akira wrote a memoir titledInsatiable: Porn—A Love Storywhich was released in May 2014 byGrove Press.[28]In July 2015, she signed a contract withCleis Pressto publish her second book, titledDirty Thirty: A Memoir,a collection of essays, which was released in the fall of 2016.[29][30]

In 2015, Akira replacedBelle Knoxas the host ofThe Sex Factor,an upcoming reality show where eight men and eight women compete for a $1 million prize and a three-year porn contract.[citation needed]

On April 6, 2015,The Hundredsstarted releasing episodes for a series titledHobbies with Asa Akira,which features Akira trying out different activities such astattooing,boxing,taxidermy,andice sculpting.[31]

Akira joinedBarstool Sportsin 2017, where she was briefly a co-host on KFC Radio.[32]

Personal life

Akira states that she is sexually attracted to both men and "girls that look like boys".[33]She dislikes being calledbisexual,claiming tolean towards heterosexuality,but to still beuncertain.[33]She was onceengagedto former pornographic actorRocco Reed.[34]She was also married to pornographic actor and directorToni Ribas,[35]and she stated that aside from their on-screen work, their relationship wasmonogamous.[36][37]

Akira identifies as afeminist.[29][38]
