Range of the three living wild ass species

Asinusis asubgenusofEquusthat encompasses severalsubspeciesof theEquidaecommonly known aswild asses,characterized by long ears, a lean, straight-backed build, lack of a truewithers,a coarse mane and tail, and a reputation for considerable toughness and endurance.

The commondonkeyis the best-known domesticated representative of the subgenus, with bothdomesticatedandferalvarieties. Among the wild ass species, several never-domesticated species live inAsiaandAfrica,with the extinctEuropean wild assspecies formerly inhabiting Europe.
