Atif Aslam[a](Punjabi pronunciation:[aːt̪ɪfəsləm];born 12 March 1983) is a Pakistaniplayback singer,songwriter, composer, and actor. He has recorded many songs in both Pakistan and India, and is known for hisvocal beltingtechnique.[1][2]

Born inWazirabad, Punjab,Atif Aslam started his music career in early 2000s. He released his first album titled "Jal Pari".In 2005, he debuted inBollywoodmusic industry by singing a song in the Indian film,Zeher.After this, he sang multiple songs in Bollywood in India andLollywoodin Pakistan. Aslam has sung forCoke Studio.Hepredominantly singsinHindi-Urdu,but also sings in his nativePunjabi,as well asBengali,PersianandPashto.[3]In 2008, he received theTamgha-e-Imtiaz,the fourth-highest civilian honor award from thePakistani government.[citation needed]He is also a recipient of severalLux Style Awards.In March 2009 He was introduced byMcDonalds PakistanTo make Commercials for cartoons likeSonic The HedgehogandHello Kitty.[4]Aslam made his acting debut in 2011, with the Urdu social drama filmBol.In 2019, he was awarded a star in theDubai Walk of Fameafter his nomination for the best singer in Pakistan.[5][6][7]He was also featured in theForbes Asia's100 Digital Stars, published in December 2020.[8]

Early life and education

Atif Aslam was born on 12 March 1983,[9][10][11]to a middle-classPunjabifamily in Wazirabad,Punjab.He has three brothers, who have all worked with him: Shahzad as photographer, Shahbaz as designer and manager and Shiraaz as his website co-ordinator.[12]He went to Kimberley Hall School inLahore,Punjab, until 1991, when he moved toRawalpindi,Punjab, and continued his studies at St. Paul's Cambridge School inSatellite Town.In 1995, Aslam returned to Lahore, where he continued his studies at aDivisional Public School and College (DPSC)branch. He proceeded to attendFazaia Inter Collegefor hisHSSCfrom 1999 to 2001, and later went toPunjab Institute of Computer Scienceto pursue abachelor's degreeincomputer science.[citation needed]

In an interview, Aslam revealed that his ambition around this time was to become a singer. He first competed on stage, and won, at the age of 15 before singing in various talent contests.[12]He also wanted to be a cricketer, being afast bowler,and was selected for thePakistan under-19 team,but he didn't go ahead as his parents wanted him to become a doctor.[13]

Music career

2003–2008

Aslam was a member of the groupJal.He released his first songAadatwith Goher Mumtaz. After separating from Jal, Aslam released his first album titledJal Pariin 2004 which became an instant hit.[14]

Aslam's second albumDooriewas released in 2006. Aslam's third albumMeri Kahanireleased in 2008 was nominated in7th Lux Style Awardsin the category "Best Album". Album's song "Hangami Halaat" nominated in 2009 in "MTV Music Awards" in the category "Best Rock Song".[citation needed]His debut song in Bollywood is "Woh Lamhe"fromZehermovie in 2005. He also sang "Aadat - Juda Hoke Bhi" fromKalyugmovie the same year and "Tere Bin" fromBas Ek Palmovie in 2006.

In 2008, he recorded "Pehli Nazar Mein" and "Bakhuda Tumhi Ho" fromRaceandKismat Konnection,respectively. "Pehli Nazar Mein" won him an IIFA Award.[15][16]

Aslam made his solo debut concert inNew Jerseyin Summer Beats 2008 atSovereign Bank Arena.[citation needed]

2009 - 2015

In the 2009 filmAjab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani,he sang "Tu Jaane Na"and"Tera Hone Laga Hoon"including remix versions of both songs which fetched him several nominations.

In March 2010 He was mostly known for making commercials forMcDonalds PakistanHe was making cartoons likeSonic the HedgehogAndHello Kitty

In 2011, he sang a song from the filmF.A.L.T.U,titled "Le Ja Tu Mujhe". The same year, he sang two songs "Hona Tha Pyar"and" Kaho Aaj Bol Do "withHadiqa Kianifor the film Pakistani filmBolin which he was cast as the lead role.[17][18]In this year, he recorded two songs for the filmTere Naal Love Ho Gaya,"Tu Muhabbat Hai" and "Piya O Re Piya".[19][20]

In 2012, he recorded two songs "Bol Ke Lab Azaad Hain" and "Mori Araj Suno" for the Hollywood filmThe Reluctant Fundamentalist.

He also performed in Coke Studio's Season Five titled "Charka Nolakha", "Rabba Sacheya" and "Dholna".[21][22][23]

On 22 April 2012, Atif Aslam became the first Pakistani to perform in London'sO2 Arena[24]a concert spectacular to promote love, peace, and unity among Pakistan and India. Aslam performed for four hours. This was followed up by shows inManchesterandGlasgow.[25][26]

In 2012, he was invited for three concerts at theWorld Trade Centrein Dubai. This was followed by his debut concert inBangkokat the Centara Convention Centre on 6 October 2012.[27]

On 2 November 2012, he performed his first public concert inMalaysia.In December 2012, Aslam was named among top performers ofDubaifor 2012.[citation needed]

Aslam is the first artist from Asia, and the second artist afterBryan Adams,who was permitted to perform inside the Dashrath Rangasla National Football Stadium inKathmandu,Nepal.[28][29]

In April 2013, Aslam performed for the first time at theLG ArenainBirmingham[30]following which he became the first artist from Asia to perform twice at London's O2 Arena. Also in concert at the O2 were Bollywood starsShaan,Malaika Arora Khan&Bipasha Basu.[31]

"Main Rang Sharbaton Ka"was nominated atWorld Music Awardsin 2014 for "Best Song".[32][33][34][35]"Main Rang Sharbaton Ka" fetched several awards and multiple nominations for him.[36]"Zameen Jaagti Hai" and "Tu Khaas Hai" were released in Pakistan. In 2014, he recorded 2 songs for the filmEntertainment,"Tera Naam Doon" and "Nahi Woh Saamne". Both songs were composed bySachin-Jigarwith lyrics written by Priya Panchal. He also sangQMobileNoir i10 advertising song "Dil Se Dil" andEtisalatadvertising song "Faasle".

He worked with Sachin-Jigar for the song "Jeena Jeena"for the filmBadlapur,[37]The song "Jeena Jeena" topped various charts and was one of the biggest hits of 2015, which also got him a nomination for the Filmfare award for best playback singer.[38][39]That same year he also recorded "Dil Kare" forHo Mann Jahaan.[40][41]

Aslam's rendition of "Tajdar-e-Haram"reached 285 million views onYouTubein July 2020,[citation needed]originally released in 2015, it became the first video to origin in Pakistan to achieve the record.[citation needed]TheQawwalisong, originally sung bySabri Brothers,was released on 15 August 2015 inCokeStudio Season 8and has been viewed in 186 countries across the world. Also, it is Aslam's first individual video on YouTube to make the record.[42]

2016 - 2020

Aslam worked with musician Arko Pravo for the songTere Sang YaarafromRustom(2016) which topped "Bollywood Life" chart, got nominated for "Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer".[43][44][45]Atif worked withMithoonon four versions of the song "Mar Jaayen" fromLoveshhudain 2016, penned by Sayeed Qaudri.

"Dil Dancer" from the movieActor in Lawreleased, which earned him LUX Award for best playback singer.[46][47]He sang "Yaariyaan" song with Ali Zafar, composed by Sahir Ali Bagga which released on 2016Defence Day.[48]He collaborated with Maher Zain for the song "I'm Alive" and sang "Jal Pari" for the advertisement ofHuawei Honor 5X.[49][50]

At the start of 2017, "Hoor" song fromHindi Mediumwas released.[51]After which, the romantic song "Baarish"fromHalf Girlfriendcomposed by Tanishk Bagchi[52]and the ballad song "Musafir" fromSweetie Weds NRIwere released. Romantic song "Darasal" composed byJAM8released the same year. Two Ballad songs "Main Agar" fromTubelightand "Jaane De" fromQarib Qarib Singlle,respectively, were out, composed by Pritam and Vishal Mishra respectively.[53]In December 2017, "Dil Diyan Gallan"fromTiger Zinda Haireleased, composed byVishal–Shekharand lyrics byIrshad Kamil.The song had garnered over 670M views on YouTube as of January 2021.[54][55]His first Bengali song "Mithe Alo" from Cockpit film was also released.

The same year, "Pehli Dafa" starring Aslam andIleana D'Cruzwas released, which was a composition ofShiraz Uppal.[56]A single "Younhi" written by Atif himself released on Atif's birthday, which featured Aslam and Nicolli Dela Nina.[57]"Noor-e-Azal"Hamdreleased, sung by Aslam andAbida Parveen,a composition of Shani Arshad. He also sangISPRsong "Kabhi Percham Main", which was released on 2017 Defence Day.[58]

He performed at16th Lux Style Awardsby singing "Pakistan National Anthem"and" Us Rah Par ".[59][60]

In 2018, a total of 19 songs were released by Aslam. "Dil Meri Na Sune"which was composed byHimesh Reshammiyafor filmGenius."O Saathi"fromBaaghi 2written by Arko,[61]"Paniyon Sa" fromSatyameva Jayate."Tere Liye" fromNamaste Englandand "Tera Hua" fromLoveyatriwere major hits in the charts.[62]He voiced for three recreated songs "Jab Koi Baat", "Dekhte Dekhte"forBatti Gul Meter Chaluwhich took the "official Asian music chart number 1" and recorded "Chalte Chalte" forMitron.[63][64][65]Other songs include "Sehmi Hai Dhadkan", three versions of "Selfish" forRace 3and two songs "Tum" and "O Meri Laila" fromLaila Majnulyrics byIrshad Kamil.[66][67][68]

"Thaam Lo from Parwaaz Hai Junoon" was also released during the same year, which earned him the LUX Award for the best playback Singer.[69]He sang "Humain Pyaar Hai Pakistan Se", released on 2018 Defence Day. "12 Bajay" was released in December 2018.

In January 2019, the "Auliya" song fromHum Chaarwas released, composed byVipin Patwa."Baarishein"released on 13 February 2019, a day before the2019 Pulwama Attack.[70][71]He performed at18th Lux Style Awardsand sang "Mujhe Dil Se Na Bhulana" with Momina Mustehsan as a tribute to Bangladeshi-Pakistani actressShabnam.[72]

"In Dinon" and "Anjaana" from the Superstar film were also released.[73]Pardadari, sung by Aslam and Abida Parveen also released.[74]

Coke Studiostarted with songs of Aslam in Season 12.Aaye Kuch Abr,Mubarik MubarikandWohi Khuda Haiwere released.[75][76][77]

The song "Kinna Sona" became a topic of controversy as it was originally recorded by Aslam for the filmMarjaavaan,but the track was replaced at the last minute by Indian singerJubin Nautiyal.[78]The song was a mix-and-match blended cover with heavy inspirations from PakistaniSufi IslamicQawwali music that was sung byNFAK.In June 2020,T-Seriesreleased the original cover sung by Aslam on YouTube, but was forced to remove it and immediately issued an apology after a threat-laced campaign led by variousright-wingIndian nationalistfigures and parties such as theMaharashtra Navnirman Sena.[79][80][81]

In 2020, Atif released "Woh Mere Bin".[82]He also sang Zong advertisement song "Aik Naya Khaab".[83]

In April 2020, he recitedAzaanshortly after which Coke Studio released"Asma-ul-Husna"in May 2020, recited by Atif Aslam and produced byZulfiqar Jabbar Khanas an expression of solidarity with humanity amid theCOVID-19 pandemic.It features voices from the universe recorded byNASA,thirty three backing vocalist from across the globe[84]and the sound ofDafwith pronunciation supervised by Hafiz Idrees[85]giving it the feat of having 4M views in four days on YouTube and as of December 2021, it has received over 50M views. Atif Aslam worked for an ad ofInfinix MobileZero 8.[86][87][88][89]"Kadi Te Hans" released on 20 November 2020 by VELO Sound Station which got 2.5M views in two days of its release.[90]

After a solo debut concert in New Jersey in 2008, Aslam returned with his band and special guests toQueens Colden Center, New Yorkfor a performance on 2 July 2020. He continued to tour the world with headline performances at theRoyal Albert Hallin London, alongsideJay Sean.[citation needed]

Aslam has also performed in Bangladesh and Kenya.[91][92]Aslam performed alongsideSonu Nigamin three occasions, one of which is a concert Shaam-e-Dostana at thePutrajaya International Convention Centrein Malaysia.[93]

2021 - Present

On 26 February 2021, Atif released the song "Raat" which was a poem byMunir Niazi.[94][95][96]A tribute toMusarrat Nazir"Chale To Kat Hi Jayega" premiered on 19 March 2021 and received 14 million views in 3 days.[97][98]On 26 May 2021, Times Music released Atif's Unreleased song "Jee Len De" from the MovieRomeo Akbar Walter(RAW) starring 'John Abraham'. Atif released the song Rafta rafta[99]on 21 July 2021. On 24 October 2021, Coke Studio released his new song "Cricket Khidaiye"[100]with Faris Shafi and Talal Qureshi on the occasion of T-20 World Cup 2021.

On 25 January 2022, Atif Aslam along with Aima Baig performed PSL National Anthem, the song titled as "Agay Dekh".[101]

On 27 October 2022, Atif Aslam's "Moonrise" was released, featuringAmy Jackson.In an interview atCapital TalkwithHamid Mir,Atif revealed an untitled Bengali song that would be released soon.[102]Some unreleased songs of Atif Aslam that were replaced by other Bollywood artists includes "Chashni".[103]

Acting career

Aslam made his acting debut in the 2011 Pakistani movieBolalong with Pakistani actressMahira Khan.

He made his television debut with the Pakistani seriesSang-e-Mah,released in January 2022 onHUM TV.

Personal life

Atif married educationist Sara Bharwana inLahoreon 29 March 2013.[104][105][106]Together they have three children: two sons and one daughter.[107]
