Austin Briggs(September 8, 1908 – October 10, 1973)[1]was acartoonistandillustrator.Born inHumboldt,Minnesotahe grew up inDetroit,Michiganbefore moving toNew York Cityas a teenager. After working for a while at anadvertising agency,he began providing illustrations for the "upmarket"pulp magazineBlue Book.[2]Briggs later became an assistant to the cartoonistAlex RaymondonFlash Gordonand succeeded him onSecret Agent Corrigan.[2]In 1940, he drew aFlash Gordondaily strip which he stayed on until about 1944; he moved on to creating illustrations for books and magazines such asReader's DigestandThe Saturday Evening Post.He was one of the founding faculty for theFamous Artists School.[2]
In 1969, he was elected to theSociety of Illustrators' Hall of Fame.
Briggs died fromleukemiainParis,where he had retired.
