Route
[edit]The A26 begins from the Genoese town ofPra',which lies on the coast to the west of the city centre. (Note that the gate of Pra' is still wrongly named "Voltri", nevertheless, Voltri has anything to do with the motorway gate and that the City of Genova has formally asked for the change of its name in "Gate of Pra'" ). It crosses the Apennines at thePasso del Turchino(532m) and passes throughOvada.Near Castelferro (frazioneofPredosa) an eastern branch, the Autostrada A26/A7, provides links toNovi Ligureand to theAutostrada A7(Genoa –Milan) which it joins nearSpineto Scrivia,to the south ofTortona.
The A26 continues northwards until nearAlessandriathere is an interchange with theAutostrada A21(Turin–Brescia). The road crosses thePo Riverjust east ofCasale Monferrato.South ofVercellia western branch, theAutostrada A4/26,provides a connection to theAutostrada A4(Turin –Trieste) nearSanthià,and continues as theAutostrada A4/A5to theAutostrada A5(Turin – Aosta – Monte Bianco) which it joins atPavone Canavese, just south ofIvrea.
Further north, betweenGreggioandBiandrateVicolungoto the west ofNovara, the A26 intersects with theAutostrada A4(Turin – Trieste), and atSesto Calendewith theAutostrada A8.The road passes close toRomagnano SesiaandGhemmewhere there is an exit for theValsesia. It proceeds north-east and follows the shore ofLago Maggiorewith exits forArona,Brovello-Carpugnino,Baveno-Stresa,VerbaniaandGravellona Toce. From here thestrada statale 33 del Sempione continues the route northwards, initially as asuperstrada(a form of expressway), toDomodossolaand then via theVal Divedroto theSwissborder, affording access to theSimplon Pass.
