Bachelor of Accountancy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

TheBachelor of Accountancy, also known asBachelor of Accounting,is the principalacademic degreeinaccountancyin several countries, and is often the only (undergraduate) degree[1]recognised for subsequent practice as aprofessional accountant;seeFirst professional degree. It is abbreviated asB.Acy.,B.Acc.,orB. Accty..It is also sometimes titledBachelor of Accounting Science(B.Acc.Sci.) or "BaccalaureusComputationis"(B.Compt.).

The B.Acy. is extremely specialized: thecurriculum [2] requires study sufficient for professional practice (often at themajor-level) infinancial accounting, management accounting, auditing, andtaxation. The curriculum also includes intermediate coursework inbusiness lawandeconomics, and general coverage ofmanagement theory, andbusiness mathematicsandbusiness statistics. The degree is thus not to be confused with aB.B.A. in AccountingorB.Com. in Accounting, which are general business degrees with accounting as an area of concentration; for discussion, seeBusiness education § Undergraduate education. Some programs allow for specializations in topics such asTax Accountancy,Auditing orForensic Accountancy.

Due to the specialised nature of the B.Acy., it is a professional degree course that is offered infrequently. In theUnited States,it is likely to be a four-year undergraduate degree. In other parts of the world, such asSingapore,it will be a three-yearundergraduatedegree. InMalta,it is a two-year course that can be taken after qualifying inBachelor of Commerceonly for students who obtain exceptional grades in their previous course. Mostpublic universities in South Africaoffer the degree or a variant, often as apostgraduate Honours degree.

After completion of the Bachelor of Accountancy, students typically go on to work as accountants in industry, and/or pursueprofessional accountantstatus. When the degree is recognized for this purpose, [3] graduates will therefore pursue theCPAorC.A.(or other) designations, and thus take up"articles"at anaccounting firmaccredited for training, so as to meet the relevantwork experience requirements, and will then also sit the associatedProfessional Examination.

Note that in theUnited States,a bachelor's degree in accountancy is generally not sufficient for practice as aprofessional accountant.[4][5]Also, employers in industry generally prefer to hire applicants with a master's in accountancy (or anM.B.A.with a concentration in accounting) and/or with professional certification.[6]Accountancy graduates intending to work as accountants will therefore commence with theMaster of Accountancy;an accelerated program, or an advanced program allowing for specialized / additional elective work, is typically available to these students.[7]
