Beau Benzschawel(born September 10, 1995) is anAmerican footballguardwho is a free agent. He playedcollege footballatWisconsinand signed with theDetroit Lionsas anundrafted free agentin 2019. He has also played for theHouston Texans.

Early life

Benzschawel playedtight endanddefensive endon thefootballteam atGrafton High School.in addition, he playedbasketballandbaseball.[1]

After originally committing toSyracuse,[2]Benzschawel committed toWisconsinon October 24, 2013.[3]He had other offers fromIowa State,WyomingandBowling Green,among others.[1]

College career

After redshirting the 2014 season, Benzschawel battled a knee injury before his redshirt freshman season.[4]

During his sophomore season, Benzschawel started every game atoffensive guard.[5]

Preceding his junior season, Benzschawel was named a pre-season All American byUSA Today.[5]He injured his leg early in the season againstFlorida Atlantic.[6]After being listed as questionable in the injury report for the following game,[7]he wound up playing againstBYU.[8]

After the season, he was named a third-team All-American.[9]He projected as a mid-round pick,[9]with reports highlighting his awareness and long arms.[10]Eventually, he decided not to enter the2018 NFL draft[11]after consulting with the NFL Draft Advisory Board.[12]

In August 2018, Benzschawel was named a preseason second-team All-America by CBS Sports.[13]He was also named a preseason first-team All-American by USA Today[14]and the Associated Press.[15]At the end of the season, Benzschawel was named a Consensus All-American.[16]

Detroit Lions

After going undrafted in the2019 NFL draft,Benzschawel was signed by theDetroit Lions.[18]On September 5, 2020, Benzchawel was waived by the Lions and signed to the practice squad the next day.[19][20]He was released from the practice squad on October 22, 2020.[21]Benzschawel was re-signed to the practice squad on October 24.[22]He was released on December 4, 2020.[23]

Houston Texans

On December 9, 2020, Benzschawel was signed to theHouston Texans' practice squad.[24]He was elevated to the active roster on January 2, 2021, for the team's week 17 game against theTennessee Titans,and reverted to the practice squad after the game.[25]He signed a reserve/future contract on January 4, 2021.[26]He was waived on April 12, 2021.[27]

Washington Football Team

Benzschawel was claimed off waivers by theWashington Football Teamon April 13, 2021.[28]He was released on August 31, 2021,[29]but re-signed to thepractice squadthe following day.[30]On January 10, 2022, Benzschawel signed a reserve/future contract after the 2021 regular season ended.[31]He was released on July 30, 2022.[32]

Jacksonville Jaguars

On August 3, 2022, Benzschawel signed with theJacksonville Jaguars.[33]He was waived on August 22, 2022.[34]

Tennessee Titans

On December 20, 2022, Benzschawel signed with the practice squad of theTennessee Titans,but was released three days later.[35]

Personal life

Benzschawel's brother Luke playedtight endfor the Badgers.[36]The brothers' father also played at UW as anose guard.[1]Beau is an avid fisherman.[37]
