Benjamin Craig Old(born 13 August 2002) is a New Zealand professionalfootballerwho plays as aattacking midfielderforLigue 1clubSaint-Étienneand theNew Zealand national football team.[2]

Early life[edit]

Old began his sports career as a golfer; he was given his firstgolf clubwhen he was two.[3]Old was considered a former child golf prodigy, playing in his first international golf tournament at the age of seven. He had travelled to the United States to play against other child prodigies from around the world inLas Vegas,PinehurstandSan Diego.[3]

Club career[edit]

Wellington Phoenix[edit]

Old originally lived in Auckland before he moved to Wellington and joined the Wellington Phoenix Football Academy in 2018.[3]While not an official member of Wellington Phoenix's senior squad, Old had trained with the team before they went to Australia.[3]Old joined the team again for training when they returned, making his debut as a substitute in the Phoenix's 3–0 win overWestern Unitedandnutmegginghis defender with his first touch.[4][2]

Old scored his first goal for the Wellington Phoenix during a 3–0 victory over theBrisbane Roaron 30 March 2022.[5]

AS Saint-Étienne[edit]

The 9th of July of 2024, the French club ofAS Saint-Étienneannounced the signing of Ben Old. They are returning toLigue 1after spending two years in the French second division,Ligue 2.

International career[edit]

New Zealand U-17s[edit]

Old was part of theNew Zealand U-17team that won the2018 OFC U-16 Championshipand qualified for2019 FIFA U-17 World Cupin Brazil.[6][7][8]Old played in two games at the World Cup, first coming on as a sub in New Zealand's opening 1–2 loss toAngolabefore getting a start in the team's 1–0 win overCanada.[9][10]

New Zealand[edit]

Old was named in the 30-manNew Zealandsquad for the2022 FIFA World Cup Oceania qualifiers.[11]He subsequently made his international debut on 19 March 2022, coming on as a substitute in the 67th minute during New Zealand's 1–0 victory againstPapua New Guineain the group stage.[12]
