Benjamin Büchel(born 4 July 1989) is a Liechtensteiner professionalfootballerwho plays as agoalkeeperforSwiss Challenge LeagueclubVaduz,which hecaptains,and theLiechtenstein national team.[2][3]

Club career[edit]

Born inRuggell,Büchel spent his early career in Liechtenstein withFC RuggellandUSV Eschen/Mauren,as well as Swiss clubFC Widnau.[1]

He signed a six-month contract with English clubBournemouthin August 2012.[4]In doing so he became the second player from Liechtenstein to play in England (afterFranz Burgmeier,who played forDarlingtonin the 2008–09 season), and only the fourth Liechtensteiner to play outside the country.[5]

He signed a one-month loan deal withDorchester Townin February 2013,[6]making three league appearances for the club.[2]

In December 2013 he joinedSouthern Football LeaguesidePoole Townon loan until 18 January 2014,[7]making 6 league appearances for them.[8]

In February 2014 he moved on loan toHavant & Waterlooville,[9]where he made 18 league appearances.[2]

In October 2014 he moved on loan toWelling United.[2]

He was released by Bournemouth at the end of the 2014–15 season,[10]and joinedOxford Unitedin September 2015.[11]On 6 October 2015, he made his debut for Oxford United in a 2–0 win against close rivalsSwindon Townin theFootball League Trophy.[12]He shared first-choice goalkeeping duties withSam Slocombefor the2015–16 season,both keepers making 23 League appearances,[13]but the appointment ofSimon Eastwoodmeant he failed to make any appearances in the first half ofthe following seasonand he was told he was free to leave during the January transfer window.[14]

Büchel joinedBarneton an emergency loan in March 2017 and was released by Oxford in May 2017,[15]after the end of the 2016–17 season.[16][17]

International career[edit]

He made his international debut forLiechtensteinin 2008, as a substitute in a friendly againstSlovakia.[1]

In 2022, he was named Liechtenstein Footballer of the Year.[18]
