Benjamin Daniele Wahlgren Ingrosso(born 14 September 1997) is a Swedish singer, songwriter and record producer. As a child, he appeared in the leading role in several musicals, and in 2006 he wonLilla Melodifestivalenwith the song "Hej Sofia". He won the celebrity dancing TV showLet's Dance 2014,and has competed twice inMelodifestivalenin2017and2018respectively. He won in 2018 and represented Sweden in theEurovision Song Contest 2018,with the song "Dance You Off".
Early life
[edit]Ingrosso was born in Danderyd, to former dancer now restaurant ownerEmilio Ingrosso,and singer and actressPernilla Wahlgren.[1]He is the younger brother ofOliver IngrossoandBianca Wahlgren Ingrosso,[2]and older half brother of Theodor Wahlgren.[2]He is the grandson of actorsHans WahlgrenandChristina Schollin,and nephew of actorsNiclas Wahlgren andLinus Wahlgren.[3]He is also a cousin ofSwedish House Mafiaband memberSebastian Ingrosso.[4]He is of Italian descent through his father, and of Swedish and Italian descent through his mother.[5][6]He is a self-taught pianist and guitarist.[7]
Career
[edit]2006–2013: Lilla Melodifestivalen 2006, singing and acting
[edit]Ingrosso has acted in several musicals and plays such asNils Karlsson Pyssling.[8]He won theLilla Melodifestivalenin 2006 with the song "Hej Sofia", and he represented Sweden inMGP Nordic 2006inStockholm,where he placed fourth.[9][10]
In 2007, he released the single "Jag är en astronaut", which his uncleLinus Wahlgrenhad recorded and performed in 1985.[11]Ingrosso's version peaked at number 2 on the Swedish singles chart.[12]The same year he participated inAllsång på Skansenalong with his mother, and he also took part in the Diggiloo tour.[11]Between 2008 and 2009, Ingrosso acted in the musicalHujeda mej vá många sånger.[13]At the Eldsjälsgala in 2009, Ingrosso and Pernilla Wahlgren performed a medley ofThe Jackson 5songs, translated into Swedish.[14]In late 2009, he performed as Rasmus in the playRasmus på luffenalong withMarkoolio.[15]
In 2011, Ingrosso performed aslillebrorin the playKarlsson på taket flyger igenatGöta Lejonin Stockholm.[16]In February 2014, he announced that he had left the musical scene to focus entirely on music and songwriting.[17]In October 2016, he released his first music single called "Fall in Love", which he performed atNyhetsmorgonwhich was broadcast on TV4.[18]He signed a record deal withTEN Music Group.[19]
2014–2017:Let's Dance 2014and Melodifestivalen
[edit]Ingrosso won the Swedish celebrity dancing TV-seriesLet's Dance 2014,broadcast onTV4,alongside his professional dancing partnerSigrid Bernson.[20]He has participated in his mother Pernilla Wahlgren's TV-seriesWahlgrens värld,which is broadcast onKanal 5and the streaming servcieMAX,since 2016.[21]
Ingrosso participated inMelodifestivalen 2017with the song "Good Lovin'",which he co-wrote along withLouis Schoorland Matt Pardon.[22]He placed fifth in the final.[23]
2018–2019: Eurovision Song Contest andIdentification
[edit]Ingrosso participated again inMelodifestivalen 2018,with the song "Dance You Off".[24]The song was written by Ingrosso,Louis Schoorl,and K Nita.[25]He qualified for the final from the first semi-final and finished in first place.[26]He representedSwedenin theEurovision Song Contest 2018inLisbon,Portugal,in the second semi-final qualifying to the final.[27][28][29]In the final he placed seventh,[30]receiving the maximum 12 points from the juries of eight countries.[31][32]Ingrosso performed his song against a backdrop of LED lights, which changed color in time to the beat of the music. He wore a black leather jacket, black jeans and white trainers.[33]
Ingrosso released his debut album,Identification,on 28 September 2018.[34]He writes all his own music and also writes for other musicians includingOscar Zia,Molly Petterson Hammar,Dash BerlinandIsac Eliott.[7]
2020–present:En gång i tidenandPlaylist
[edit]Ingrosso took part in the eleventh series of Swedishreality televisionshow,Så mycket bättre,alongside multiple fellow Swedish artists includingLoreenandTove Styrke.On 15 January 2021, he released his second studio album,En gång i tiden.[35]The album is entirely in Swedish and marks his first full album in the language. Speaking about the album onsocial media,Ingrosso stated, "I love and miss singing in Swedish" and that the inspiration for the record came from his "love for Swedish pop and all of the great Swedish musicians that’s been my source of inspiration since [he] was a kid".[36]The second part of the album,En gång i tiden (del 2),was released on 16 April.[37]
Ingrosso's fourth studio album and second English-language album,Playlist,was released on 17 June 2022.[38]
Ingrosso performed several songs as the interval act in the first semi-final of theEurovision Song Contest 2024inMalmöincluding his Swedish number one "Kite".[39]
Personal life
[edit]Ingrosso was in a six-year relationship with influencer Linnea Widmark; the couple broke up in March 2019.[40]
