TheBerlin Openofficially known as theWest Berlin Open[1][a]was a men'stennistournament founded in 1896 as a combined event (women included) called theChampionships of Berlinuntil 1914,[2]followingWorld War Ithe event was known as theBerlin Championships.[3][4]The event was first played at the Lawn-Tennis-Turnier-Club until 1906.[5][3]In 1907 it moved toGrunewald,and a new venue theRot-Weiss Tennis Club.[3]FollowingWorld War IIthe tournament was branded as theWest Berlin International Championships.[3]It then ran annually until 1973 as a combined event when the women's tournament was discontinued.[3]The men's event carried on until 1983 when it was last held inWest Berlin,West Germany.[3]The event was part of theGrand Prix circuitand was played on outdoorclay courts.[3]
