Melchor "Biboy" Ravanes(born January 6, 1959) is a formerFilipinoprofessional basketball player and former head coach of theSan Miguel Beermenin thePhilippine Basketball Association.[1]Prior to this, he was SMB's longtime assistant coach.

Ravanes was part of a wave of Cebuano cagers recruited by the squad, then known asSan Miguel Bravesin theMICAA.He was also a member of the franchise’s first championship in 1979. Apart from the Beermen, he also saw action for Shell and Alaska in his career that spanned 16 seasons. A tenacious defender, he was named to the league’sAll-Defensive Teamthree times.[2]

Coaching career

Ravanes became an assistant coach for thePop Cola PanthersunderChot Reyesin 2000, specifically for player relations.[3]But when the Panthers sold toCoca-Colaand becameCoca-Cola Tigers,he was retained on its inaugural season, until 2006, when national team head coachChot Reyes,assistant coachesNash Racela,and Aboy Castro joinedSan Miguel Beermen.[4]He stayed on the Beermen even Reyes, Racela and Castro left forTalk 'N Text.

Ravanes become head coach of San Miguel Beermen, replacingGee Abanilla,withTodd Purvesasactive consultant.[1][2]After two conferences of winning standings but losing on playoffs, Ravanes and Purves was demoted and replaced byLeo Austria.[5]
