Božidar Debenjak(born 7 May 1935) is aSlovenianMarxistphilosopher,social theoristandtranslator.

Biography

He was born inLjubljana,Slovenia,then part of theKingdom of Yugoslavia.In 1961, he became professor at theUniversity of Ljubljana.[1]For more than thirty years, he taughtMarxist theoryandhistory of philosophyat the Ljubljana University; many renowned Slovenian philosophers and sociologists were among his pupils, includingSlavoj Žižek,Mladen Dolar,Rastko Močnik,Renata SaleclandTonči Kuzmanić.[2][3]He was one of the first scholars to introduce the thought of theFrankfurt schoolin the curricula ofYugoslavuniversities.

He has written several books, mostly on Marxist theory, including a monograph on the thought ofFriedrich Engels(Friedrich Engels: History and Alienation,1970), in which he portrayed Engels as a "subtlerhistorical materialistthan Marx ", who" managed to establish a clearer dividing line between history and nature ".[3]HisIntroduction to Marxist Philosophy(1977) was published in 4 editions, and was one of the most influential synthesis of Marxist thought in Slovenia.[3]

He also translated several works, mostly fromGerman,including several works byKarl Marx(especiallyyoung Marx),Friedrich Engels,Rosa Luxemburg,Theodor Adorno,Max Horkheimer,Herbert Marcuse,Karl Korsch,Lenin,Jürgen HabermasandMartin Luther.He also translatedHegel'sPhenomenology of the MindandValvasor'sThe Glory of the Duchy of Carniola(together withhis wifeand son), and co-authored one of the most comprehensive Slovene-German dictionaries.[4]

He was married toDoris Debenjak(née Kirsch), a Slovenian translator ofGottschee Germandescent and chair of theSociety of Native Gottschee Settlers.[5]
