TheSpanish hogfish(Bodianus rufus) is a species ofwrassenative to the westernAtlantic Ocean,where it can be found fromNorth CarolinaandBermudathrough theCaribbeanand theGulf of Mexicoto southernBrazil.It inhabitscoralor rockreefsat depths of 1 to 70 m (3.3 to 229.7 ft). While the adults feed on such prey asmolluscs(snails,mussels,andsquid),[2]crustaceans(Mysisandbrine shrimp),[2]echinoderms(brittle starsandsea urchins),worms,and smallfish,[2]the juveniles act ascleaner fishes.This species can reach a length of 40 cm (16 in), though most do not exceed 28 cm (11 in). This species is of minor importance to localcommercial fisheriesand can be found in theaquariumtrade.[3]WhenMarcus Elieser Blochnamed thegenusBodianushe usedBodianus bodianusas thetype speciesof the genus, this is ajunior synonymofBodianus rufus.[4]
