In 2018, two firms inSpainranked among the world's biggestpublishers of booksin terms of revenue:Grupo PlanetaandGrupo Santillana.[1][nb 1]In 2013, there were 524,213 titlesin printin Spain, including 76,434 new titles.[4]

History

"The first Spanishpresswas set up in 1473 atValencia,where the German trading company of Ravensburg had an important base.... Publishing flourished in the early period atBarcelona,Burgos,Zaragoza,Seville,and the university towns ofSalamancaandAlcalá de Henares."[5]The Instituto Nacional del Libro Español (National Book Institute) formed in 1941.[6]As of 2004 Spain had some 2,000+ book publishers in the private sector, includingPrensa Española[es],andPrisa.[7]As of 2013 there were 809 publishing enterprises.

TheUnited Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural OrganizationdesignatedMadridthe 2001World Book Capital.
