Brian Chase(born February 12, 1978) is an Americandrummeranddronemusician who plays in theNew Yorkrock bandYeah Yeah Yeahs.He was ranked at No. 50 inGigwise's list ofThe Greatest Drummers of All Time.[1]
Career
[edit]Chase metKaren Oat Ohio'sOberlin College,and he joined theYeah Yeah Yeahsin 2000 after their original drummer left the trio.[2]
Starting at college, Chase played for the rock band The Seconds.[3]Chase has been described by theNew York Timesas "a consummate music nerd, a conservatory-trained jazz drummer who still plays in the city’s experimental scene."[4]He plays drums withtraditional grip.[5]
Outside of his rock work with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Chase has performed in a number of experimental duos with other musicians, such as Stefan Tcherepnin and Seth Misterka, with whom he released a CDDuoon the Australian Heathen Skulls label in 2007.[6]Other musicians he has played with includeJessica Pavone,Mary Halvorson,Yonatan Gat,Moppa Elliott, and groupsOakley Hall,Blarvuster, andklezmer-fusionists The Sway Machinery.[7]
In May 2010 the Chase/Misterka Duo performed at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival[8]and then a month-long Australian tour. A second recordThe Shape of Soundwas released to coincide.[9]
In 2013, Chase released the albumDrums & Drones.[4]A follow-up,Drums & Drones II,was released in 2018 by Canadian label ICM.[10]Chase'sdronework has been inspired by his time working atLa Monte YoungandMarian Zazeela'sDream House,NYC.[11]
Chase founded and operates Chaikin Records, alabelnamed after his family's original name.[12]
