Brian Paul Engblom(born January 27, 1955) is aCanadianice hockeybroadcasterfor theTampa Bay Lightning,and a former professional hockeydefenseman.He was a three-timeStanley Cupwinner with theMontreal Canadiens.
Biography
[edit]Engblom was born inWinnipeg,Manitoba,and played for theUniversity of Wisconsin–Madison.He was drafted 22nd overall by theMontreal Canadiensin the1975 NHL Entry Draft.He played his first two professional seasons with Montreal'sAHLaffiliateNova Scotia Voyageursbefore playing in his firstNHLgame in the 1977Stanley Cup playoffswith Montreal. He won twoStanley Cups,in1978,and1979with the Canadiens. Engblom's name was left off the Cup in 1977 because he played no regular season games. He played in two playoff games and did not play in the finals.
In September 1982, while he was establishing himself as a top NHL defenseman, Engblom was traded to theWashington Capitalsas part of a six-player blockbuster trade that sent him,Doug Jarvis,Rod LangwayandCraig Laughlinto Washington in exchange forRick GreenandRyan Walter.[1]A season later, he was dealt withKen Houstonto theLos Angeles Kingsin exchange for future Hall Of FamerLarry Murphy.He finished his career with stints for theBuffalo Sabres,andCalgary Flames.Engblom's final NHL season of1986–87ended prematurely due to bone spurs in his spinal column that required major surgery to repair.[2]In 11 seasons, Engblom scored 29goalsand 177assists.
Broadcasting career
[edit]Engblom was an NHLcolor commentatorforESPNandNHL on ABCfrom 1993 to 2004. AfterNBC Sportsacquired NHL TV rights in 2004, he served as their color commentator/studio analyst for both NBC/NBCSNand the network's coverage of the2014 Winter OlympicsinSochi,Russia. Engblom was an analyst onNHL Livefor Versus and also served as a color analyst forWinnipeg Jetsgames onTSNin Canada.[3]During the 2005–06 season, he was color analyst forColumbus Blue Jacketsgames aired onFox Sports Ohio.Engblom has also provided post-game analysis for theColorado AvalancheonAltitude Sports and Entertainment,in rotation withMark Rycroft.
Engblom joinedSun Sportsfor the 2015–16 season as a color analyst for theTampa Bay LightningreplacingBobby Taylor,who moved to studio host.[4]
