Brigianii
TheBrigianii(Gaulish:*Brigianioi) were aGallictribe dwelling around present-dayBriançonduring theIron Ageand theRoman period.
Name
[edit]They are mentioned asBrigianiibyPliny(1st c. AD),[1]and asBrigiani,BrigantionisandBricianiorumon inscriptions.[2][3]
Their name may be based on theGaulishrootbrig- ('high, elevated'),[3]or onbrīgo- ('might, strength').[4]
Geography
[edit]The Gallitae lived in the region ofBriançonnais,in the center of theCottian Kingdom.[5]Their territory was located north of theCaturiges,west of theQuariates,east of theTricorii,south of theSegovii.[6]
Their chief town was known as Brigantio (modernBriançon), meaning 'eminence, high/elevated place' in Gaulish.[5][7]
History
[edit]They are mentioned byPliny the Elderas one of the Alpine tribes conquered by Rome in 16–15 BC, and whose name was engraved on theTropaeum Alpium.[1]
