Early life[edit]

James was born inLakewood, California,to Eric McClure (1961–2016)[2]and Bette McClure, and raised inFullerton, California.[3]Bryton was exposed to music early in life through his father, who was a musician, songwriter, and music producer.[4][3]

Career[edit]

James started in show business when he was two years old.[4]He appeared in commercials and magazine ads, including one with singerMichael Jackson.[4]At the age of four, he began portrayingRichie Crawfordon the sitcomFamily Matters,[4]where he appeared from 1990 to 1997 in over 200 episodes.[5]He has portrayedDevon Hamiltonon theCBSsoap operaThe Young and the Restlesssince June 2004.[5]He won the 2007Daytime Emmy AwardforOutstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series,and earned nominations for the same award in 2006 and 2008.[5][6]After being nominated for theNAACP Image AwardforOutstanding Actor in a Daytime Drama Seriesfrom 2005 through 2008, James won the award in 2009.[5][7]

James was a guest star in the dramaThe Vampire Diariesduring its second season as warlock Luka Martin. He voices Jason James/Z-Strap onNicktoonsanimated seriesZevo-3andVirgil Hawkins/Staticin theCartoon NetworkseriesYoung Justice: Invasion.He has provided the voice of Mark Surge inHero Factory.His credits also include voice acting work as Freddie on theanimated seriesThe Kids from Room 402,MowglionThe Jungle BookCD-ROM,[5]and Zare Leonis onStar Wars Rebels.Additionally, James was a recording artist and performed onDisney Channeland other U.S. and international networks.[5]

In July 2018, it was announced that James had joined the cast ofNickelodeon's animated series,Glitch Techs.[8]In 2020, he won the Daytime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a drama series forThe Young and the Restless.

Personal life[edit]

James married Ashley Leisinger on March 16, 2011. The ceremony was officiated by hisThe Young and the Restlessco-starChristian LeBlanc.[9]In June 2014, James confirmed that he and Leisinger have since divorced but are still close friends.[10]He began dating his co-starBrytni Sarpyin May 2019.[11][12][13]

James is best friends with hisThe Young and the Restlessco-starChristel Khalil,[14]saying about their friendship: "Christel and I have practically grown up together and have experienced some of the same things in our adult lives. We've always had each other's backs. I'm an only child and Christel is the closest thing I have to a sibling."[15][16]James is the godfather to Khalil's son, Michael Caden.[17]He is also godfather to his otherThe Young and the Restlessco-star,Daniel Goddard's eldest son, Ford.[18]

James is a spokesperson for many charitable organizations and founded RADDKids (Recording Artists, Actors, and Athletes Against Drunk Driving) in 1996.[5]
