Cadherin-16is a protein that in humans is encoded by theCDH16gene.[5][6][7]

This gene is a member of thecadherinsuperfamily, genes encoding calcium-dependent, membrane-associatedglycoproteins.Mapped to a previously identified cluster of cadherin genes onchromosome 16q22.1, the gene localizes with superfamily membersCDH1,CDH3,CDH5,CDH8andCDH11.The protein consists of anextracellular domaincontaining 6 cadherin domains, atransmembrane regionand a truncatedcytoplasmicdomain but lacks theprosequenceandtripeptideHAV adhesion recognition sequence typical of most classical cadherins. Expression is exclusively in the kidney, where the protein functions as the principal mediator of homotypic cellular recognition, playing a role in themorphogenicdirection of tissue development.[7]
