Calenzano(Italian pronunciation:[kalenˈdzaːno]) is acomune(municipality) in theMetropolitan City of Florencein theItalianregionTuscany,located about 11 kilometres (7 mi) northwest ofFlorence.As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 15,557 and an area of 76.9 square kilometres (29.7 sq mi).[3]

Calenzano borders the following municipalities:Barberino di Mugello,Campi Bisenzio,Prato,San Piero a Sieve,Sesto Fiorentino,Vaglia,Vaiano.

  • Villa Ginori a Collina,a patrician villa
  • Church ofSan Niccolò e Oratorio della Compagnia del Santissimo Sacramento,rebuilt before 1386. It includes frescoes byJacopoandNardo di Cioneand a panel byDomenico Cresti.
  • Pieve di San Donato(9th-11th centuries), with a Renaissance cloister built in 1460 byCarlo de' Medici.
  • Pieve di Santa Maria(built before the 11th century). It houses aMadonna with St. ThomasfromLorenzo di Credi's workshop and aSt. Anthony the AbbotfromRidolfo del Ghirlandaio's school.
  • The ancientPieve di San Severo,with frescoes from the 14th-15th centuries.
  • Church ofSanta Lucia a Settimello(before 10th century, rebuilt in Baroque style in the early 18th century). It houses a terracotta byBenedetto Buglioni(1507) and a wooden crucifix byBaccio da Montelupo(early 16th century)
  • Parco del Neto(park), at the foot ofMonte Morello.

Transportation

Calenzano has a station on the regional railway connecting it toPrato,Florence,PistoiaandLucca.It can be reached by road from the A1 Motorway. Bus services connect it to Prato, Florence,Campi Bisenzioand Barberino di Mugello.
