TheCanoo Lifestyle Vehicle(LV) is abattery electric vehiclewith multiple body styles sharing a common platform, includingminivan, cargo van, andpickup truck, manufactured and marketed byCanoo. The cargo van variant, named theLifestyle Delivery Vehicle(LDV), is in production; an all-wheel-drive pickup truck, named theLight Tactical Vehicle(LTV), has been delivered for evaluation by theUnited States Army;and three other models of passenger vans have been announced. They have range estimates of 400 km (250 mi) and an estimated 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) time of 6.3 seconds.[2]

The base price of the vehicle is announced to beUS$34,750. Production of the Lifestyle Delivery Vehicle began in 2023. The first vehicles made in Oklahoma were delivered to the state of Oklahoma in November 2023.[3]

Chassis

[edit]

The LV and LDV are built on a chassis integrating the battery, traction motor, and suspension in a singleskateboard chassis, which Canoo call the "multi-purpose platform" (MPP),[8]designed to accommodate a wide variety of bodies, including cargo van, passenger van, and pickup truck styles. Canoo anticipate a body or powertrain swap will take approximately two hours.[1]

The Canoo Lifestyle Vehicle (passenger minivan) will be available in three trims. The Base trim has five seats. The Premium trim, priced $49,950, has a glass roof, a front street view window, a 17 speakers audio system, ambient lighting, an ultraviolet air purifying system, and seven seats; the two additional seats are mounted longitudinally on the rear doors, with its occupants facing each other. The Adventure trim adds an exclusive paint color, a tow hitch and roof rack.[11]The body uses a steel structure covered by plastic panels.[9]There is 130 cu ft (3.7 m3) of enclosed space in the body, of which 13 cu ft (0.37 m3) is behind the rear seat in passenger models.[1]

LDV omits the rear side windows

The Lifestyle Delivery Vehicle (cargo minivan), priced US$34,750, has two seats and 1,464 lb (664 kg) of cargo capacity.[11]In August 2023, Canoo announced the LDV 190, retroactively renaming the original LDV to LDV 130; the LDV 190 is aClass 2vehicle with reinforced suspension and 172 cu ft (4.9 m3) of cargo space behind the bulkhead for the front cab. It also is equipped with a modular "rear cargo cartridge" which enables the user to install different rear hatch and tailgate configurations.[4]

An unnamed pickup truck concept was shown in 2021, with an extended cab configuration. It is anticipated to be available either as a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive chassis or a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive model.[12]For the Canoo Light Tactical Vehicle (LTV), a single-cab pickup truck using the MPP chassis supplied to theUnited States Armyfor evaluation in December 2022, the leaf springs are replaced by air springs due to increased weight. Other changes include increased wheel and tire size, and unique control arms at all four wheels.[13]

Styling

[edit]

The Canoo LV was designed by a team led byRichard Kim;Kim previously had designed theBMW i3andi8concepts, and served as the vice president of design forFaraday Futurebefore leaving to co-found Canoo.[14]The design won aRed Dot"Best of the Best" design concept award for mobility & transportation in 2020.[15]

Powertrain

[edit]

A prototype driven byMotor Trendin December 2022 was equipped with a single rear-mounted traction motor which weighs 200 lb (91 kg). It was designed and built by Canoo, with a maximum output of 200–350 hp (150–260 kW; 200–350 PS) and 304 lb⋅ft (412 N⋅m), which can be adjusted using software. The single-speedreduction gearhas a ratio of 9.7:1.[1]

The LV may add a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive variant in the future,[1]as the LTV includes a second motor for the front axle. The estimated combined maximum output of the dual-motor LTV is 600 hp (450 kW; 610 PS) and 600 lb⋅ft (810 N⋅m).[13]

Battery and range

[edit]

The LV will have a 80 kWh (290 MJ) battery with a range of approximately 250 mi (400 km). As originally announced, 40 and 60 kWh batteries also were planned to be available. The traction battery operates at 400 V and has an energy density of 195 Wh/kg using 2170-sized cells, suggesting the weight of the 80 kWh battery is 410.3 kg (905 lb).[10]

The battery uses2170cylindrical lithium-ion cells manufactured byPanasonicand integrated into the chassis in eight battery modules.[16]The eight modules are sealed into the floor, riding between the frame rails, a belly panel below, and the cabin floor above; as Pete Savagian, Canoo's Chief Technology Officer explained in 2021, "Riding in that cavity are the modules, which are protected by the structure, and the modules themselves are structurally attached to the frame. They actually serve to stiffen, somewhat, the frame and transfer some of the load during a crash event."[10]Due to its modular design, 4680 or pouch cells could be used in the future.[10]

Lifestyle Vehicles will be assembled in factories to be built inArkansasandPryor,Oklahoma. As of 2022, Canoo aims to build at least 3,000 vehicles in 2022, then 14,000 in 2023 and 40,000 in 2024 and 70,000 in 2025.[17]The production of the first vehicles was set originally to take place inBentonville, Arkansasto support deliveries to Walmart, but later was shifted to an unspecified contractor in August 2022.[18]

Approximately 120 prototypes were built atRoush IndustriesinLivonia, Michiganby December 2022, using tooling and processes developed by Canoo; these tools will be taken back to the Canoo Oklahoma factory in 2023. The first official production vehicle was assembled on November 17, 2022; Canoo plan to fill exclusively commercial fleet orders for the first year of production.[1]Some of the prototypes were tested byWalmartInHome as delivery vehicles in theDallas–Fort Worth metroplexstarting in July 2022.[8]The first vehicles made in Oklahoma were delivered to the state of Oklahoma in November 2023.[3]
