Carmencita Hederman(néeCruess Callaghan;born 23 October 1939) is a former IrishIndependentpolitician who served asLord Mayor of Dublinfrom 1987 to 1988 and aSenatorfor theDublin Universityconstituency from 1989 to 1992.[1]

Political career

She was a member ofDublin City Councilfrom 1974 to 1999.[2]

She was the daughter of George Cruess Callaghan and sister of Frank Cruess Callaghan, both successful businessmen as well as the niece ofJoseph Cruess Callaghan.[3]She wasLord Mayor of Dublinfrom 1987 to 1988 during theDublin Millenniumcelebrations.[4]She was elected to theSeanadin 1989 for theDublin Universityconstituency.[5]

Family

Her husband was William Hederman (from 1962 until his death on 30 December 2016). A third-generation doctor and surgeon, Billy Hederman—son of William, a general practitioner on the staff of Limerick County Hospital inCroomand Ethel (née Hannigan) Hederman—was president of theRoyal College of Surgeons in Irelandfrom 1990 to 1992 and later president of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland.[6]

Her daughter, Wendy Hederman, was also later councillor onDublin City Council,representing theProgressive Democrats.[7]
