Hermeticismis a religious and philosophical tradition based primarily upon theCorpus Hermeticum,a collection ofpseudepigraphical writingswhose authorship is traditionally attributed to thelegendaryHellenisticfigure ofHermes Trismegistus( "Thrice Great" ). These writings have greatly influenced theWestern esoteric traditionand were considered to be of great importance during both theRenaissanceand theReformation.The Hermetic tradition claims descent from aprisca theologia,a doctrine which affirms that a single, true theology exists which is present in all religions and was given byGodto humankind inantiquity.
