Cetostearyl alcohol,cetearyl alcoholorcetylstearyl alcohol[1]is a mixture offatty alcohols,consisting predominantly ofcetyl(16 C) andstearyl alcohols(18 C) and is classified as afatty alcohol.It is used as anemulsionstabilizer,opacifyingagent, andfoamboostingsurfactant,as well as anaqueousand nonaqueousviscosity-increasing agent. It imparts anemollientfeel to theskinand can be used in water-in-oil emulsions, oil-in-water emulsions, andanhydrousformulations.It is commonly used in hair conditioners and other hair products.[2]


5% cetyl stearyl alcohol in petrolatum is cytotoxic per theMTT assay.
