Taxonomy

[edit]

The genusChloephagawas introduced in 1838 by the English naturalistThomas Campbell Eytonin hisA Monograph on the Anatidae, or Duck Tribe.[2]He designated thetype speciesasChloephaga magellanica. This isAnas magellanicaGmelin, JF1789, which is asynonymofAnas leucopteraGmelin, JF 1789.Anas leucopterais now considered as asubspeciesof theupland gooseChloephaga picta leucoptera.[3]The genus name comes from the combination of theAncient Greekkhloēmeaning "grass" with-phagosmeaning "-eating".[4]

Amolecular phylogeneticstudy by Mariana Bulgarella and collaborators published in 2014 found that theOrinoco goosein themonotypicgenusNeochem, was embedded in the genusChloephaga:[5]

Orinoco goose(Neochem jubata)

Andean goose(Chloephaga melanoptera)

Ashy-headed goose(Chloephaga poliocephala)

Ruddy-headed goose(Chloephaga rubidiceps)

Upland goose(Chloephaga picta)

Kelp goose(Chloephaga hybrida)

Based on this result, some authorities place the Orinoco goose together with theAndean goosein the resurrected genusOressochen.[6][7][8]

A fossilized partialcoracoid(CTES-PZ 7797) of an indeterminateChloephagaspecies sharing some characters with the extantupland gooseis known from theupper PleistoceneToropí Formation(also called the Yupoí Formation) inCorrientes Province,Argentina, 700 kilometers further north than the northernmost present-day record of the genus.[9]

Species

[edit]

The genus contains five species.[10]

Chloephaga melanoptera Andean goose Peru to south Chile and Argentina
Chloephaga picta Upland gooseor Magellan goose southernmost South America
Chloephaga hybrida Kelp goose Chile's southern half to the eastern tip of Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands
Chloephaga poliocephala Ashy-headed goose southernmost South America
