Background[edit]

The song of Fijian origin is considered to be very well known in Fiji and the Pacific.[1]It is also a popular party song.[2]The Fijian version begins with the lyrics "Chulu Chululu o lo’u manuee"with this verse repeated five times throughout the song.[3]The song was originally composed bySam Freedmanwhose songs have been covered byThe Kingston Trio,Bill SevesiandMaria Dallasetc.[4][5]

Eddie Lund version[edit]

It was possibly first commercially released byEddie Lund& His Tahitians and released on record in 1958.[6]It was released as a single onViking Recordsin May 1958.[7]The B side "Samoa Silasila" was sung in Samoan. According to the National Public Library of New Zealand, the group that recorded it was an Auckland based Tahitian group.[8]It appeared on Lund'sLure of Tahitialbum which was released in 1960.[9][10]

English version[edit]

The song was recorded by Bill & Boyd inRotorua, New Zealand1964.[11]It became a hit for them and appeared on their albumSongs for a cloudy afternoon.[12]The English version was written by Bill Cate and Bill Robertson.[13]Bill and Boyd rerecorded the song in 1974 and that version appeared as the B-side to the single, "Santa Never Made It Into Darwin". The single was recorded to raise money after the devastating1974 cyclonethat decimated Darwin.[14]

Other versions[edit]

In 1993, New Zealand groupThe Radarsrecorded their version of the song as the B side to "The Banana Boat Song"released on theEpiclabel. It gained them an award under theBest Polynesian Albumaward, beating finalistsDalvanius& the Patea Maori Club and the Kaiwhaiki Cultural Club.[15][16][17]The Wigglesalso recorded their version on theirWake Up Jeff! album.
