Chungcheong(Chungcheong-do;Korean pronunciation:[tɕʰuŋ.tɕʰʌ̹ŋ.do̞]) was one of theeight provincesofKoreaduring theJoseon Dynasty.Chungcheong was located in the southwest of Korea. The provincial capital was located atGongju,which had been the capital of the kingdom ofBaekjefrom 475 to 538. The cities who were on former province will host the2027 Summer World University Games.
History
[edit]Chungcheong Province was formed in 1356—during theGoryeoDynasty—from the southern portion of the former province ofYanggwang.Its name derived from the names of the principal cities ofChungju(충주; trung châu ) andCheongju(청주; thanh châu ).
In 1895, the province was replaced by theDistrictsof Chungju (Chungju-bu;충주부; trung châu phủ ) in the east, Gongju (Gongju-bu;공주부; công châu phủ ) in the centre, and Hongju (Hongju-bu;홍주부; hồng châu phủ; modern-dayHongseong County) in the west.
In 1896, Chungju and eastern Gongju Districts were reorganized intoNorth ChungcheongProvince, and Hongju and western Gongju Districts were reorganized intoSouth ChungcheongProvince. North and South Chungcheong are today part ofSouth Korea.
Geography
[edit]Historic Chungcheong was bordered on the north byGyeonggiProvince, on the north east byGangwon,the east byGyeongsangProvinces, on the south by NorthJeollaProvince, and on the west by theYellow Sea.The region is mountainous in the east (the North province) and somewhat lower and flatter in the west (the South province).
Theregional namefor Chungcheong isHoseo(호서; hồ tây ), although this name is used less than the current administrative name.
Apart from Cheongju, Chungju, and Gongju, other large or notable cities in the modern-day Chungcheong region includeDaejeon,CheonanandJanghang.
Transportation and communication
[edit]Historically, almost all transportation and communication routes betweenSeouland the southernHonam(Jeolla) andYeongnam(Gyeongsang) regions have gone through the Chungcheong region, and todayDaejeon—the region's largest city—is a majorrailway and freewayjunction.
