Claudine Auger(bornClaudine Oger;26 April 1941 – 18 December 2019) was a French actress best known for her role as aBond girl,Dominique "Domino" Derval,in theJames BondfilmThunderball(1965). She earned the title ofMiss France Monde1958 (the French representative to theMiss Worldbeauty pageant) and went on to finish as the first runner-up in the1958 Miss Worldcontest.[citation needed]
Career
[edit]Jean Cocteaucast Auger in an uncredited role as a tall ballerina inTestament of Orpheus(1960). When she was 18, she married the 43-year-old writer-directorPierre Gaspard-Huit,and he cast her in several films, includingLe Masque de fer(1962) andKali Yug: Goddess of Vengeance(1963).[1]In 1966 she co-starred in theWorld War IIdramaTriple CrosswithYul BrynnerandChristopher Plummer.
The most immediate byproduct of Claudine's stardom was a semi-nudePlayboyspread.
Thunderballlaunched Auger into a successful European movie career, but did little for her otherwise in the United States.[2]She did, however, star in aDanny Thomasspecial calledThe Road to LebanonwithBing Crosby,which was shown on NBC on 20 April 1966.[3]
Auger co-starred with anotherBond girl,Ursula Andress,in the Italian comedyAnyone Can Play(1968). She starred with two futureBond girls,Barbara BouchetandBarbara Bach,inBlack Belly of the Tarantula(1971), agiallomystery. She had some roles in European films such asTriple Cross(1966, reuniting her with her James Bond directorTerence Young), andThe Killing Game(1967).[4]She filmed scenes forThe Eiger Sanction(1975), only to have her entire performance cut from the movie.[2]
Auger appeared in the British television seriesThe Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes,in "The Three Gables" (1994), as Isadora Klein, in one of the last episodes of the series.
Personal life and death
[edit]In 1959, she married film director and screenwriterPierre Gaspard-Huit.They later divorced.[citation needed]
She married British businessman Peter Brent[5]in the 1980s.[2]
Auger died in Paris on 18 December 2019 following a lengthy illness.[6][7][8][9]
