Colman Jason Domingo(born November 28, 1969) is an American actor, playwright, and director. Prominenton both screen and stage,he has receivedvarious accolades,including aPrimetime Emmy Award,and nominations for anAcademy Awardand twoTony Awards.Timemagazine named him one of the100 most influential people in the worldin 2024.[1]

Domingo's earlyBroadwayroles include the 2005 playWelland the 2008 musicalPassing Strange.He gained acclaim for his role as Mr. Bones in the Broadway musicalThe Scottsboro Boys(2011), for which he was nominated for theTony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.He reprised the role in the 2014West Endproduction, being nominated for theLaurence Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical.In 2018, he wrote the book for the Broadway musicalSummer: The Donna Summer Musical.

After early roles in various incarnations of theLaw & Orderseries and as part of the main cast forThe Big Gay Sketch Show,he had his breakthrough playingVictor Strandin theAMCseriesFear the Walking Dead(2015–2023).[2]He won thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Seriesfor his performance as the recovering drug addict Ali on theHBOseriesEuphoria(2019–present).

Domingo's film appearances include supporting roles inLincoln(2012),Selma(2014),If Beale Street Could Talk(2018),Ma Rainey's Black Bottom(2020), andThe Color Purple(2023). For his role as a ruthlesspimpinJanicza Bravo'sZola(2021), he was nominated for anIndependent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male.His portrayal ofcivil rightsactivistBayard Rustinin theNetflixfilmRustin(2023) earned him a nomination for theAcademy Award for Best Actor.

Early life and education

Domingo was born and raised as the third of four children inPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania.[3]Domingo was raised by his mother Edith Bowles and her husband[4][5]in a working-class household.[3]His mother was a homemaker and worked in a bank;[6]his stepfather Clarence[7]sanded floors for a living.[3]Edith passed away in 2006, the day after Domingo's audition for the theater musicalPassing Strange.[4][8]His stepfather had died a few months earlier.[8]

Domingo's biological father was fromBelizewith relatives fromGuatemala.[9]He left the family when Domingo was nine years old.[3]Domingo had a speech impediment, a lisp,[10]as a child and was sent to speech therapy classes by his mother.[8]

Domingo is a 1987Overbrook High Schoolgraduate[11]and later attendedTemple University,[12][13][14]where he majored in journalism. Soon thereafter he moved to San Francisco, California, where he started acting, mainly in theatre productions.[13][15]

Domingo has taught at theO'Neill National Theater Institute,[16]University of Texas at Austin,[17]andUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison.[18]

Career

1994–2010: Early roles

Domingo starred as Mr. Franklin Jones, Joop, and Mr. Venus in the critically acclaimed rock musicalPassing Strange,[19]which, after a successful 2007 run atThe Public Theater,opened onBroadwayon February 28, 2008. He received anObie Award[20]in spring 2008 as part of the ensemble ofPassing StrangeOff-Broadway and reprised his roles in the film version ofPassing Strange,directed bySpike Lee,which made its premiere at theSundance Film Festivalin January 2009. In 2010, Domingo's self-penned, one-man autobiographical playA Boy and His Soulpremiered Off-Broadway at theVineyard Theatre,for which he won aLucille Lortel Awardfor Outstanding Solo Show.[21]He was also nominated for a Drama Desk Award[22]and a Drama League Award.[23]Domingo starred as a replacement role asBilly FlynninChicago,the longest running revival onBroadway.[24]

During this time Domingo also acted in numerous television series. He made his television debut in the police proceduralNash Bridgesin 1997 and made numerous appearances on the series. He took a small role inClint Eastwood'sTrue Crime(1999) and acted in the independent filmsDesi's Looking for a New Girl(2000),Kung Phooey(2003), and the crime dramaFreedomland(2006). He also took minor roles inLaw & Order,Law & Order: Criminal Intent,andLaw & Order: Trial by Jury.He also acted in the sketch seriesThe Big Gay Sketch Showfrom 2008 to 2010.

2011–2017: Rise to prominence

Domingo earned acclaim in the final collaboration by Kander and Ebb,The Scottsboro Boys,[25]directed bySusan Stromanon Broadway in Fall 2010. For that role he was nominated for theTony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musicalin May 2011.[26]WhenThe Scottsboro Boys[27]opened in London in Fall 2013, Domingo was nominated[28]for theLaurence Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musicalin April 2014. He was nominated for the Fred Astaire Award for Best Principal Dancer on Broadway in 2011.

Domingo collaborated withSpike Leeappearing in his filmsMiracle at St. Anna(2008) andRed Hook Summer(2012). He appeared as Private Harold Green inSteven Spielberg's historical epicLincoln(2012). The following year he appeared in thecivil rightsfilms42(2013) playing Lawson Bowman andThe Butler(2013) as Freddie Fallows. In 2014 he appeared inAva DuVernay'scivil rightsfilmSelmaportraying activist and Baptist ministerRalph Abernathy.

In 2015, Domingo began appearing in a recurring role onAMC'spost-apocalyptic, zombie seriesFear the Walking Dead,as a character namedVictor Strand.In December 2015, it was announced that Domingo was promoted to series regular for Season 2 of the series.[29]That same year he had a recurring role as Dr. Russell Daniels in theCinemaxseriesThe Knick.The following year he made appearances onLuciferandLouis C.K.'s self-streaming showHorace and Pete.In 2017, Domingo joined theAcademy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciencesas a member of the Actors' Branch.[30]In 2018, Domingo joined theDirectors Guild of America[31]as a director of episode 12 of season 4 ofFear The Walking Dead.[32]He is the first ever actor inThe Walking Deaduniverse to helm an episode.[33]In 2020, Domingo signed a first-look deal withAMC Networks.[34]

2018–present: Established actor

In 2018 he appeared inBarry Jenkins'If Beale Street Could Talk,a film adaptation of theJames Baldwin1974 novel of the same name.In the film he plays Tish's father, Joseph Rivers. His on-screen wife is played byRegina Kingwho received theAcademy Award for Best Supporting Actress.That same year he collaborated withSam Levinson,acting in the black comedy filmAssassination Nationplaying Principal Turrell. The following year Levinson cast Domingo in a recurring role as Ali, a recovering drug addict in theHBOdrama seriesEuphoria.In 2020 he received acclaim for his role as Cutler in theNetflixadaptation ofAugust Wilson's playMa Rainey's Black BottomstarringViola DavisandChadwick Boseman.He also received attention for his role as X, a ruthlesspimpin the crime filmZoladirected byJanicza Bravo.For his role as X he received a nomination for theIndependent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male.In 2022 he received thePrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Seriesfor his role inEuphoria.

Domingo starred ascivil rightsactivistBayard Rustinin the 2023NetflixfilmRustindirected byGeorge C. Wolfe.Upon the announcement of his being cast in the lead role, the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice, anLGBTQIAsafe-space,community activist center, and educational bridge dedicated to honoring Bayard Rustin through their mission and good works, voiced their approval directly to Domingo, espousing that "Your powerful voice helps amplify Bayard Rustin, Godfather of Intersectionality, Planned theMarch,Brought non-violence to the Movement, Inspired theFreedom Riders,Lost to history because of who he loved, Who he was. Angelic Troublemakers unite! "[35]For his performance he received nominations for theAcademy Award,BAFTA Award,Golden Globe Award,andScreen Actors Guild Awardfor Best Actor. The Academy Award nomination made him the first Afro-Latino to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor,[36]as well as the second openly gay man, afterIan McKellen,and the first American openly gay man, to receive an Academy Award nomination for playing a gay character.[37][38]

Also in 2023, he appeared as Mister in the movie musical adaptation ofThe Color Purpledirected byBlitz the Ambassador.The film received positive reviews along with a nomination for theScreen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.He also voiced theDC ComicssuperheroBatmanin theSpotifyscripted podcastThe Riddler: Secrets in the Dark.[39]Domingo portrayed John "Divine G" Whitfield in the filmSing Singwhich premiered at the2023 Toronto International Film Festivaland which was picked up byA24for distribution in 2024.

In 2024 it was announced that Domingo was cast to playJoe Jacksonin the musical biopicMichael(2025) about the life of singerMichael Jackson.[40]It was also announced Domingo is set to direct and star in the leading role of a untitledNat King Colebiopic from a script he co-wrote.[41]

Personal life

Domingo isgay.He met his husband, Raúl Domingo, in 2005 and they married 9 years later, in 2014.[42][43]
