Condom(Occitan:Condòm;French pronunciation:[kɔ̃dɔ̃]), also known asCondom-en-Armagnac,is acommunein southwesternFrancein thedepartmentofGers,of which it is asubprefecture.

The town of Condom is located in the northern part of thedepartmentofGers,halfway betweenMont-de-Marsan(to the west) andMontauban(to the east), and north ofAuch.

Way of St. James

Condom is a town on theVia Podiensis,one of the three major French arms of the pilgrimage route, theWay of St. James.

This particular route begins inLe Puyand ends inSantiago de Compostelain northwestSpain.Pilgrimsarrive at Condom afterMiradouxand continue on toLarressingle.

Toponymy

ThetoponymCondomcomes from theGaulishwordscondateandmagoscombined intoCondatomagos,which means "marketor field, of theconfluence".

Condatómagosevolved intoCondatómand then intoConddóm.Condomwas first recorded inLatinin the 10th century asCondomusorCondomium.[3]It is where the riverGèleflows into the riverBaïse.[4]

Although the French word for acondomispréservatif,in 1995 the town's mayor, taking advantage of the incidental relationship between the town's name and the English word, opened a museum of contraceptives. It operated until 2005.[5]

Sites of interest

Condom is the site of two castles, theChâteau de Mothes and the Château de Pouypardin,both started in the 13th century. In total, 19 sites in Condom are listed asmonuments historiquesby theFrench Ministry of Culture,including thecathedral,churches and houses.

Condom is known for the production ofArmagnac,an international music festival of "bandas", an international chess tournament and an international chess marathon. It is also known for its tourism with farm campings and boating on waterways. It is also home to a museum about Armagnac.[8][9]

A statue ofThe Three Musketeersandd'Artagnanstands beside the cathedral and was created in 2010 byZurab Tsereteli.[10]
