Coupar Angus(/ˈkʊpər/;Gaelic:Cupar Aonghais)[2]is a town inPerth and Kinross,Scotland.It lies on theRiver Islain the broad and fertileValley of Strathmore,4 miles (6 kilometres) south ofBlairgowrie.TheA94 roadfromPerthtoForfarruns through the town, and it had astationon theMidland Junctionline until 1967.

The town formerly straddled the border betweenAngusandPerthshire,but it has lain wholly within Perthshire since 1891.[3]It retains the name "Coupar Angus", however, which serves to distinguish it fromCuparinFife.[4]

History

The six-storeyTolboothwas built in 1762, funded by public subscription.[5]

In theMiddle AgestheCistercianCoupar Angus Abbeywas one ofScotland's most important monasteries, founded byMalcolm IV(1153–65) in the 1160s. Of the abbey, only architectural fragments, preserved in the 19th-century parish church (which is probably on the site of the monastic church), or built into houses and walls throughout the town, survive, along with part of one of its gatehouses.[6]

Coupar Angus Town Hallwas commissioned to celebrate theGolden Jubilee of Queen Victoriaand completed in 1887.[7]

Several Polish units were stationed in and around Coupar Angus during theSecond World War.[8]

TheScottish Foldbreed ofcatoriginated in or near Coupar Angus.[9]

Coupar Angus is home to thejuniorfootballclubCoupar Angus F.C.and also Coupar Angus Amateur Football Club.

Stagecoach East Scotlandoperate services 57/57A and 59 via Coupar Angus which go toDundee,BlairgowrieandPerth.The services each run hourly.[10]
