Crymocetus(meaning "cold sea monster" ) is anextinctgenus ofplesiosaurfrom theLate CretaceousChalk GroupofSussex,England.[1]It is only known from the type species, which isC. bernardi.[2]

Discovery and naming

[edit]

The holotype consists of a single posteriorcervical vertebrawhich was discovered in theChalk GroupinSussex,England. It was first named asPlesiosaurusbernardibyOwen(1850).[3]However,Cope(1869) re-studied the holotype and decided thatP. bernardiwarranted its own genus, which he namedCrymocetus.[2]

After Cope (1869) was published, nearly all subsequent authors tended to disregard the nameCrymocetus,withLydekker(1889) synonymisingCrymocetuswithCimoliasaurus.[4]

In any case,Crymocetusis in need of restudy along with other plesiosaurs from theCretaceousdeposits ofEngland.

Classification

[edit]

Cope(1869)[2]initially classifiedCrymocetuswithinElasmosauridae,whileWelles(1962)[5]and Persson (1963)[6]instead consideredCrymocetusto be either a member of thePliosauridaeorRhomaleosauridae.Crymocetusis today classified withinPlesiosauriaincertae sedis.
