Curtis Blaydes(born February 18, 1991)[7]is an American professionalmixed martial artist.He currently competes in theHeavyweightdivision in theUltimate Fighting Championship(UFC). A professional since 2014, Blaydes formerly competed for theResurrection Fighting Alliance(RFA). As of April 30, 2024, he is #4 in theUFC heavyweight rankings.[8]

Background[edit]

Blaydes was born inNaperville, Illinois,and raised in nearbyChicagoalong with his four other siblings. He beganwrestlingfor theDe La Salle Institute,winning a state title his senior year while also compiling an undefeated 44–0 record. During his four years, Blaydes compiled an overall record of 95–18 with 121 takedowns. Blaydes also playedAmerican footballfor De La Salle as a defensive end. He later earned a fullwrestlingscholarship toNorthern Illinois University.After going 9–2 as a redshirt freshman at NIU, he transferred toHarper College.At Harper, Blaydes won theNJCAANational Championship as a redshirt sophomore. After he began fighting in amateur mixed martial arts, Blaydes left school to focus on a career in MMA.[9]

Blaydes was anIKFamateur champion.[10]

Mixed martial arts career[edit]

Early career[edit]

Blaydes compiled an 8–0 amateur record before turning professional in 2014. He then went 5–0, with all wins via TKO, before being signed by the UFC.[11]

Ultimate Fighting Championship[edit]

Blaydes made his promotional debut againstFrancis Ngannouon April 10, 2016, atUFC Fight Night 86.[12]He lost the fight via TKO at the conclusion of the second round due to doctor stoppage.[13]

Blaydes next faced Cody East on October 1, 2016, atUFC Fight Night 96.[14]He won the fight via TKO in the second round,[15]winning his first UFC Performance of the Night bonus.[16]

Blaydes facedAdam Milsteadon February 4, 2017, atUFC Fight Night 104.[17]After dominating the action throughout the first round, Blaydes won the fight via TKO after Milstead sustained a knee injury.[18]Subsequently, the result was changed to a No Contest after Blaydes tested positive for marijuana.[19]

Blaydes facedDaniel Omielańczukon July 8, 2017, atUFC 213.[20]He won the fight by unanimous decision.[21]

Blaydes facedAlexey Oleynikon November 4, 2017, atUFC 217.[22]He won the fight via TKO due to a doctor stoppage. The referee stopped the fight after Blaydes delivered an illegal kick to a downed opponent and called a doctor to check on Oliynyk. The fight was stopped due to the doctor's advice. The replay, however, showed the strike did not deliver significant damage (as it only grazed the ear), and the fight was ruled a win for Blaydes.[23]

Blaydes was scheduled to faceDerrick Lewison November 28, 2020, atUFC on ESPN: Blaydes vs. Lewis.However, he tested positive for coronavirus and thus, the bout was scrapped.[39]The pair was rescheduled forUFC Fight Night 185on February 20, 2021.[40]Blaydes lost the fight via knockout in the second round.[41]He became a free agent after fighting out his contract, and signed a new four-fight deal with the UFC in May.[42]

Blaydes was scheduled to faceJailton Almeidaon November 4, 2023, atUFC Fight Night 231.[52]However, Blaydes withdrew for unknown reasons and was replaced byDerrick Lewis.[53]The pair was rescheduled forUFC 299on March 9, 2024.[54]After being taken down nine times in round one, Blaydes won the fight by technical knockout in round two.[55]This fight earned him anotherPerformance of the Nightaward.[56]

In a rematch, Blaydes is scheduled to face InterimUFC Heavyweight ChampionTom Aspinallfor the title on July 27, 2024 atUFC 304.[57]
