Daboecia/dæˈbʃiə/,[1]orSt. Dabeoc's heath,is a smallgenusofflowering plantsin thefamilyEricaceae,containing twoevergreenshrubs,closely related to the genusErica.They arenativeto cliffs andheathlandin southernAtlantic Europeand theAzores.[2]

Description

They produce urn-shaped flowers in shades of white, pink and red.Daboeciadiffer from EuropeanEricaspeciesin having a substantially largercorolla.The leaves are always alternate inDaboecia,never whorled. The generic name comes from the Irish SaintDabheog.

Distribution

Daboeciahas an oceanic distribution in western Europe, including western Ireland, western France, northwestern Spain, northwestern mainland Portugal and theCentral Groupof the Azores.[3]LikeEricaandCallunaspecies,Daboeciaarecalcifuges,but will tolerate neutral soils and avoid peat.

Some botanists regardD. azoricaas asubspeciesofD. cantabrica,which would render the genus monospecific.

Cultivation

The two species have been extensively cultivated andhybridisedto produce a number of popular garden plants.Cultivarsinclude selections from the hybrid between the two species, which is namedDaboecia×scotica.
