Dalasýsla(Icelandic pronunciation:[ˈtaːlaˌsistla]) was one of the pre-1988 traditionalCounties of Iceland,located in theWestern Regionof the country. Its only town isBúðardalur.[1]
The county had a rich history dating back to the first settlers ofIceland.Leif Eriksongrew up in Dalasýsla in the 10th century, andÁrni Magnússon,scholar and collector of manuscripts, was born at Kvennabrekka in Dalasýsla in 1663.[2]
The poet, historian, and politicianSnorri Sturlusonwas born at the farm ofHvammur í Dölum .[3]PainterHelgi Fríðjónssonwas born in Búðardalur on March 7, 1953, as well as artistHreinn Friðfinnsson(1943 – 2024).[4]
