Daniela Calzettiis an Italian-American astronomer known for her research oncosmic dust, star formation, andgalaxy formation and evolution, and in particular for the Calzettidust extinctionlaw, an estimate for how much information about distant galaxies has been obscured by cosmic dust.[1][2]She is a professor of astronomy and head of the astronomy department at theUniversity of Massachusetts Amherst, and principal investigator of the Legacy ExtraGalactic Ultraviolet Survey project of theHubble Space Telescope.[2]

Education and career[edit]

Calzetti is originally fromParma.[3]She earned a laurea in physics fromSapienza University of Romein 1987, where she completed her Ph.D. in 1992, with the dissertationLarge-Scale Distribution of Galaxies and Clusters: The Scale of Inhomogeneitysupervised byRemo Ruffini.[4]

She worked as a researcher for theSpace Telescope Science Institutefrom 1990 to 2007, when she moved to the University of Massachusetts Amherst.[4]

Recognition[edit]

Calzetti was elected to theNational Academy of Sciencesin 2020.[2][3]
