David Catching(born June 7, 1961) is an American musician fromMemphis, Tennessee.He is a founding member of the Californiastoner rockbandsearthlings?from 1993–present, andQueens of the Stone Agefrom 1996-2000, a former touring member ofEagles of Death Metalfrom 2003-2017 and the current operator of theRancho De La Lunarecording studio.[1][2]

Catching has played the guitar for well-known hard rock bandsEagles of Death Metal,Queens of the Stone Age,Tex and the Horseheads,as well asMark Lanegan,The Ringling Sisters,earthlings?,Mondo Generatorand theMasters of Reality,Yellow #5,andGnarltones.

Catching has been associated with the desert country rock band,Smith & Pyle.He contributed to the debut album of country rock duoSmith & Pyle,It's OK to be Happy,which was recorded at his recording studioRancho de la Lunaand released in 2008. He currently resides inJoshua Tree, California.

Catching was on stage with Eagles of Death Metal during theNovember 2015 Paris attacks,and escaped theBataclanwith the rest of the band. Catching talked about this at length on the showConan Neutron's Protonic Reversal,[3]Rolling Stone[4]and other media.

He also uses for live shows and recordingEchopark GuitarsAlbert 58, andYamahaAES 1500. His pedalboard consists ofEarthquaker Devices,Dispatch Master and Astral Destiny, aT.C. ElectronicsPolytune 2 tuner, and Spark,Jim DunlopWah pedal and Rotovibe pedal,OriginMe-Q Drive,Dr No EffectsColossus,Solid Gold FXLysis and EM-III,BossDD#3 Delay,RadialBigShot, into a combination ofBruce ZinkyTremoverb, and Mofo, orLanham AmpsDragonslayer withColby AmpsElpico. With theEagles of Death Metal,Catching played his 1967Gibson Flying Vthrough a tuner and distortion pedal andSuproamplifier with a 2x12 cabinet andOrange Amplifiers.He also used anAmpegDan Armstrong guitar when playing with Eagles of Death Metal. Catching also usesHipStrapvintage styled guitar straps. He is endorsed by and usesErnie Ballultra slinky guitar strings, coiled red Bullet Cable.

Catching released a signature fuzz wah pedal in 2015, theRoadrunner,through Dr. No Effects.[5][6]

In 2023 partnered withGrand Casino Factoryto imagine and develop the F.R.E.D. or Frequency Re-arranging Experimentation Device, cited by Catching as a tribute toFred Drake,his departed former partner inRancho de la Lunaas 'an unequalled sonic enhancement device befitting such a fantastic, uniquely wonderful, talented man asFred Drake

From 1993-2015 with earthlings?, he used his 1958Fender Stratocasteror his 1972 double cutawayGibson Les Paulthrough a tuner and a distortion Rat pedal.[7]His Les Paul is 1 of 6 ever made byStrings & Thingsin Memphis, Tennessee. Other guitars were bought byAce Frehley,Jeff Beck,Pat Travers,and Michael Woods, guitarist for the groupAmerica.Photos have circulated of Dave's very guitar nearly being bought byGreg LakeofEmerson, Lake, and Palmerfame, but opting out at the last minute for an acoustic bass.[8]

Catching co-foundedRancho de la Lunarecording studio withFred Drakein 1993. After Drake's death in 2002, Catching has since run the studio and continues to this day, hosting such musical acts asFoo Fighters,Queens of the Stone Age,Arctic Monkeys,Iggy Pop,Daniel Lanoisand many others
